Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Sept. 14th

 

FIELD HOCKEY

The field hockey team posted a 1-1 mark last week, shouldering a tough loss to #12 Amherst (5-0), before defeating Castleton (9-2). The victory over the Spartans also marked a major milestone for MHC head coach Andy Whitcomb, who now has 200 wins at the helm of the Lyons. Mount Holyoke (2-2) returns to action on Wednesday in a 6:30pm contest at Williams. The #18 Lyons conclude the week on Saturday, hosting Thomas at 3pm on the Turf Field.

SOCCER

The Lyons went 1-1 last week, being edged by Amherst (2-1) and defeating Seven Sisters-rival Bryn Mawr (2-1). First year Sara Sanaú Ruiz (Zaragoza, Spain)
was outstanding last week, scoring all three of the Lyons goals. MHC (2-2) returns to action on Tuesday in a 4:30pm match at Western New England University. The Lyons then close out the week with their NEWMAC opener against Babson on Saturday at 12pm on the soccer field.

TENNIS

Mount Holyoke defeated Simmons (7-2) and Emerson (9-0), but saw its undefeated record come to an end in a loss to #31 Wellesley (9-0) to close out the week. Four different players went 2-1 on the week in singles action, including junior Alexa Colas (Teaneck, N.J.) MHC (4-1) returns to the court on Saturday, hosting MIT at 12pm on the MHC Tennis Courts.

 

VOLLEYBALL

The Lyons posted a 2-1 mark last week, suffering a loss at MCLA (3-0) before rebounding with tri-match wins against Anna Maria (3-0) and UMass-Dartmouth (3-2) in their home opener. First year middle hitter Sarah Caggiano (Leonardtown, Md.) had a solid week, recording 20 kills, including 10 in the five-set win over the Corsairs. MHC (5-1) continues its four-game homestand this week, beginning Tuesday in a 7pm NEWMAC match against Babson. The Lyons close out the week on Saturday, hosting conference-foe Emerson at 12pm.

CROSS COUNTRY

Under the direction of fifth-year head coach Jennifer Adams, the cross country team opened its 2015 campaign with a victory at the 2015 Smith Invitational. The Lyons saw three runners finish in the top 10, with five total in the top 15. Senior Elizabeth DeLeon (Boise, Idaho) paced the way, finishing third overall. MHC returns to action on September 26 when it competes at the Purple Valley Classic, hosted by Williams College.

RIDING

The Lyons riding team opens its 2015 campaign on Saturday at the Preseason Tournament of Champions. Under the direction of head coach CJ Law, MHC looks to return to the National Champions, following a 10th-place finish at last year's IHSA. The Lyons will open their regular season slate on Saturday, October 3rd at the Smith Show.

GOLF

Guided by fifth-year head coach Tim Walko, the Lyons kick off their 2015-16 campaign on Saturday at the NYU Invitational. Action at the event, which will be held in Suffern, N.Y., continues through Sunday. MHC is coming off a season which saw it finish second overall at the Liberty League Championships. Three student-athletes were named to the All-League Team for their performances.
