Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Oct. 11th

 

FIELD HOCKEY

The field hockey team posted a 2-1 week, shouldering a loss at Smith (2-1) before bouncing back with 1-0 wins over Simmons and Springfield. Senior captain and midfielder Sarah LaQuerre (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) led the offensive effort with a goal and an assist. Mount Holyoke (7-5; 2-2 NEWMAC) is back in action on Saturday when it hosts Babson at 2pm on the Turf Field.

SOCCER

The Lyons went posted a 2-0 week, defeating NEWMAC-rivals Clark and Wellesley by 1-0 scores. Junior captain and goalie Zoe Marshall (Mississauga, Ont.) backstopped MHC's defense with a combined 23 saves, including 14 against the Blue. Mount Holyoke (8-3-1; 2-1-1 NEWMAC) is back on the pitch on Tuesday, hosting Coast Guard for a 6:30pm game. The Lyons close out the week on Saturday with a 12pm home game against Wheaton.

TENNIS

Mount Holyoke defeated Springfield (6-3), but lost to Babson (9-0) in NEWMAC action last week. Despite the loss, the Lyons secured their 12th straight berth in the upcoming conference tournament. The will host one of two quarterfinal matches on Wednesday, Oct. 21st. Seedings and pairings will be announced soon. MHC (7-3; 5-3 NEWMAC) is back on the court this weekend when they play in the NEWITT Tournament, hosted by Amherst and Smith Colleges.

 

VOLLEYBALL

The Lyons suffered a loss to Coast Guard in their only game last week. First year middle hitter Joy Maran (Santa Fe, N.M.) led the way with six kills. MHC (6-9; 0-7 NEWMAC) returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Springfield in its final regular season home game at 7pm.

CROSS COUNTRY

MHC saw a strong effort at the 2015 Open New England Championships as it placed 32nd in the varsity race and 27th in the junior varsity event. Sophomore Sunny Shan (Cupertino, Calif.) led the effort, finishing 134th overall in a field of over 300 runners. The Lyons are back in action on Sunday when they travel to Bryn Mawr for the 2015 Seven Sisters Championship. The race begins at 10am.

RIDING

The Lyons were idle last week, but return to action on Saturday when they compete at the Williams College Show.


GOLF

Mount Holyoke finished eighth overall at the 2015 Williams Fall Classic. Leading the way was junior captain June Conti (Amenia, N.Y.), finished in a tie for 11th overall. The Lyons are back on the links this weekend when they compete at the Ann S. Batchelder Invitational, hosted by Wellesley College. Action begins on Saturday and runs through Sunday.


ROWING

The Lyons kicked-off their 2015-16 campaign on Saturday at the Quinsigamond Snake Regatta, hosted on Lake Quinsigamond. MHC saw its varsity eight boat put forth a solid performance, finishing 10th of 27 competing boats. Mount Holyoke is right back in action this weekend when it travels to Boston to compete at the 2015 Head of the Charles Regatta on Sunday.
