Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Nov. 2nd

FIELD HOCKEY

The field hockey team went 2-0 last week, defeating Westfield State (8-3) and Wheaton (8-3) to close out the regular season. Junior forward Charlotte Wagner (West Chester, Pa.) paced the effort, recording four goals and two assists. The Lyons (12-6; 5-3 NEWMAC) secured the fifth-seed for the NEWMAC Tournament and will face fourth-seeded MIT on Tuesday in the conference quarterfinals. Game time for the match is set for 6pm. The winner advances to Saturday's Semifinal game at top-seeded Babson (12pm).

SOCCER

The Lyons powered their way to a pair of 1-1 double-overtime draws last week against Smith and WPI. Junior goalie Zoe Marshall (Mississauga, Ont.) anchored the defensive effort, posting 15 combined saves in the week, including an 11-stop performance against WPI. Mount Holyoke (9-6-3; 4-3-3 NEWMAC) secured the sixth-seed in the NEWMAC Tournament - its first appearance since the 2009 season. The Lyons will play at third-seeded Babson on Tuesday in a 1:30pm start. The winner of Tuesday's game advances to Saturday's Semifinals and will play the winner of the #2/#7 match between Wheaton and Smith (1:30pm or 3:30pm).

VOLLEYBALL

The Lyons closed out their 2015 season last week, shouldering tough losses at Smith (3-1) and WPI (3-0). Mount Holyoke finishes its campaign with a 7-16 overall record (0-10 NEWMAC). including victories over Elms, St. Joseph, Medgar Evers, Anna Maria, UMass-Dartmouth, Worcester State and Norwich.

 

CROSS COUNTRY

MHC powered its way to sixth overall at the 2015 NEWMAC Championships on Sunday. The Lyons were led by sophomore Sunny Shan (Cupertino, Calif.), who earned All-Conference honors after finishing 13th overall in the field of 151 runners. Mount Holyoke is now idle until November 14th when it heads to New London, Conn., to take part in the 2015 NCAA New England Regional Championship. The event will be hosted by Connecticut College at Harkness Park.

RIDING

The Lyons took home the victory in last weekend's Amherst College Show, notching 43 points behind a number of outstanding efforts. Highlighting the event was junior Bridget Finnerty (Baltimore, Md.), who earned overall High Point Rider honors after victories in Open Fences and Open Flat. MHC is now idle until November 14 when it competes at the UMass/Amherst Show in Hadley.


ROWING

Mount Holyoke finished fourth overall at the 2015 Seven Sisters Championships, hosted by the Lyons at the MHC Boathouse. The event, which featured four races, saw seniors Chenyue Lu (Xiangtan, China) and Ashley Avila (Jamestown, R.I.) earn All-Seven Sisters Regatta Varsity Team honors. First year Monika Sharma (Amherst, Mass.) was also tabbed to the All-Seven Sisters Regatta Novice Team. MHC has concluded its fall season and will return in the spring.

SWIMMING & DIVING

Senior Cathleen Pruden (Raleigh, N.C.) posted three wins, including Assumption pool records in the 1000-free and the 200-IM, as the Lyons shouldered a tough loss to the Division II Greyhounds on Friday. Mount Holyoke then swam at the Smith College Relays on Saturday, claiming victory in 10 of 15 events at the non-scoring meet. The Lyons are back in action on Saturday, opening their home schedule against the University of New England at 1pm.
