Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Oct. 21st

 

SOCCER

The Lyons shouldered losses to Coast Guard (3-2) and Wheaton (2-0) last week in NEWMAC action. Sophomore Ashleigh Hartsock (Stevensville, Md.) and junior Kara Singleton (Parsonsfield, Maine) each had a goal and an assist in the loss to the Bears. Mount Holyoke (5-10; 0-7 NEWMAC) is right back in action on Tuesday when it travels to Springfield for a 7pm contest.

FIELD HOCKEY

The field hockey team claimed victory in its only game last week, a critical 4-1 win against Babson in NEWMAC play. Junior midfielder Diana Banmann (Hannover, Germany) and first year forward Charlotte Wagner (West Chester, Pa.) each had two goals and an assist in the game.  The #19 Lyons (12-1; 4-1 NEWMAC) are back in action this week with a pair of critical conference matches, beginning Tuesday at home against WPI at 7pm. MHC then travels to #18 MIT for a 1pm game in Cambridge.

TENNIS

Mount Holyoke particpated in the NEWITT Tournament last week at the MHC Tennis Courts. The Lyons saw five pairs compete over the course of two days, led by senior Maya Sayarath (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) and sophomore Margaux Holloschutz (Franklin Lakes, N.J.), who advanced to the second round quarterfinals of the B Draw. The Lyons (6-5; 4-4 NEWMAC) return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Babson for the NEWMAC Quarterfinals. MHC, the fifth-seed, will battle the fourth-seeded Beavers at 3pm for the right to move onto the conference semifinals.

VOLLEYBALL

The Lyons shouldered a 3-0 loss to Springfield on Tuesday and fell by tough-fought 3-1 scores against Keene State and Plymouth State in the NEWMAC/Little East Challenge at Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium on Saturday. Senior outside hitter Martina Kneifel (Oro Valley, Ariz.) had 51 kills over the three contests for the Lyons.

Mount Holyoke (9-13; 0-8 NEWMAC) returns to action on Wednesday when it competes at Elms for a 6pm contest. The Lyons then host the annual Volleyball Hall of Fame Tournament, in conjunction with Smith College. Action begins on Friday with games at 5pm and 7pm and continues to Saturday with matches at 9am, 11am, 1pm and 3pm.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Lyons competed at the 2013 Seven Sisters Championships, hosted by Smith College last weekend. Junior captain Dana Fry (Avon, Conn.) was the Lyons top finisher, placing 12th overall. MHC returns to action on Sunday, November 3, when it competes at the NEWMAC Championships, hosted by Babson College.

RIDING

MHC was idle this week, but returns to action on Saturday when it competes at the UMass Horse Show.

CREW

The Mount Holyoke crew team was idle this week, but returns to the water on Sunday when it heads to Bryn Mawr to compete in the 2013 Seven Sisters Championship Regatta.
