Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Nov. 18th

FIELD HOCKEY

The Lyons defeated Gwynedd-Mercy, 5-2 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, but fell by a 1-0 margin in double-overtime against top-ranked Montclair State in the Second Round. Mount Holyoke closes out its season with an 18-3 overall record. That mark saw the Lyons posted the second-most wins in program history (behind the 2002 team - 19-4) and the fewest losses since the 1977 season.

Additionally, four student-athletes were recognized with post-season awards. First year goaltender Liz DiCesare (Westford, Mass.) was named the NEWMAC Rookie of the Year and was also tabbed to the All-Conference Second Team alongside sophomore Sarah LaQuerre (Old Orchard Beach, Maine). Juniors Diana Banmann (Hanover, Germany) and Kirsten Kilburn (North Branford, Conn.) each garnered First Team All-Conference recognition.

Banmann and Kilburn were also named to the Longstreth/NFHCA Division III All-New England East Region First Team, while DiCesare and LaQuerre were Second Team selections.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Lyons concluded their season last weekend at the 2013 NCAA New England Regional Championship, hosted by the University of Southern Maine. MHC, which finished 24th of 53 teams at the meet, were led by sophomore Elizabeth DeLeon (Boise, Idaho), who finished 92nd in a field of 371 participants.

RIDING

MHC closed out its fall season last weekend with a victory in its own home show. The Lyons, which defeated seven other teams, finish the fall slate with an undefeated record. Among the top wins of the fall included a perfect score at the Amherst Show two weeks ago. MHC returns to action on December 7 when it travels to Centenary College to compete at the Holiday Tournament of Champions.

SWIMMING & DIVING

The Lyons swimming & diving team posted a 167-125 victory over Westfield State last week to improve to 2-1 in dual meet action. Sophomore Bethany Aban (Poulsbo, Wash.) paced the way for MHC, recording three victories, including two individual. Mount Holyoke returns to action on Saturday with a 1pm contest at Western Connecticut State.

SQUASH

The Lyons squash team officially opened its 2013-14 season last week, going 1-1 overall. MHC defeated Tufts, 8-1 before falling 7-2 at Williams the next day. Senior Shaheen Madraswala (Mumbai, India) and sophomore Sherouk Khefagy (Cairo, Egypt) both went 2-0 overall. Mount Holyoke returns to action on Saturday when it plays at Brown University at 1:30pm.

BASKETBALL

Led by 10th-year heach coach Michelle Scecina, the MHC basketball team opened its 2013-14 season with a tournament title, winning the 2013 Mariner Pepsi Classic at Maine Maritime. The Lyons opened action with a 77-63 win over Bates and sealed the title with a 51-38 victory against the host Mariners. Junior Amber Legare (Chicopee, Mass.) was named the Tournament MVP after posting a double-double. MHC (2-0) is right back in action on Wednesday when it begins NEWMAC play on the road at WPI (7pm).
