Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Sep. 8th

 

FIELD HOCKEY

The #17 field hockey team extended its unbeaten streak to three games last week, posting victories over Nichols (7-0) and Rensselaer (3-1). Sophomore forward Charlotte Wagner (West Chester, Pa.) paced the Lyons offense, scoring four goals, including her first career hat trick. MHC (3-0) is back in action on Tuesday when it plays at Amherst at 5pm. The Lyons close out the week at home, welcoming the Spartans of Castleton State at 12pm.

SOCCER

The Lyons posted a 1-1 week, defeating Lyndon State, 4-2, before falling by a 1-0 margin to Husson. MHC was paced by senior Kara Singleton (Parsonsfield, Maine), who scored two goals in the victory against the Hornets. MHC (1-2) is back on the pitch on Wednesday when it travels to Amherst for a 5pm match against the Jeffs. The Lyons wrap up the week hosting Southern Vermont at 2pm. TENNIS

Mount Holyoke went 1-2 on the week, defeating Saint Joseph (9-0), while falling to Simmons (5-4) and Wheaton (5-4). First year Ishita Tibrewal (Kolkata, India) and sophomore Mira Murali (Fall City, Wash.) each had outstanding efforts as both improved to 4-0 on the season in singles action. The Lyons (2-2) returns to action this weekend with a pair of critical NEWMAC matches. MHC hosts Emerson on Saturday at 1pm and will welcome Wellesley on Sunday at 11am.

 

VOLLEYBALL

The Lyons hosted its second tri-match of the season last weekend, defeating Saint Joseph (3-1) for their first win of 2014, before falling to Bridgewater State in a tough 3-1 draw. Junior Emma Sweeting (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.) shined on the weekend, posting a team-best 37 kills with 29 digs and five service aces.

The Lyons (1-3) return to the court on Tuesday when they host MCLA for a 7pm match. MHC closes out the week at the Seven Sisters Championship, hosted this year at Vassar. After a Saturday which will feature match-ups against Wellesley (12:30pm) and Bryn Mawr (3pm), the Lyons face the host Brewers (9am) and Smith (2pm) on Sunday.

 

CROSS COUNTRY

The Lyons opened their 2014 season on Saturday at the Smith Invitational. It was an excellent effort for MHC, which finished fourth of 16 teams at the 5k event. Leading the way was sophomore Becca Rogers (Tucson, Ariz.), who was sixth overall with a time of 19:58.60. Mount Holyoke returns to action on September 27th when it competes at the Purple Valley Classic at Williams (1pm).

 

GOLF

Led by fourth-year head coach Tim Walko, the Lyons open their 2014-15 campaign this week at the NYU Invitational. Action begins on Saturday and runs through Sunday. MHC opens the year as the defending Liberty League Champions, having defeated NYU by 21-strokes to claim the crown. In addition to Liberty League Coach of the Year honors, the Lyons were recognized with individual honors for Madi Mendiola (San Diego, Calif.), the conference's Player of the Year, and June Conti (Amenia, N.Y.), the Rookie of the Year.
