Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Oct. 13th

 

FIELD HOCKEY

The #19 Lyons went 2-0 last week, defeating Smith (7-1) and Springfield (4-1). Senior captain Kirsten Kilburn (North Branford, Conn.) etched her name into the record books with her five assists last week, tying the all-time program record for career assists (49). Mount Holyoke (9-2; 3-1 NEWMAC) returns to action on Saturday in a 12pm match at Babson. Links to live options can be found at http://athletics.mtholyoke.edu/sports/fh/2014-15/schedule.

 

SOCCER

The Lyons posted a 2-0 mark last week, defeating Clark, 2-1 in overtime, and edging Wellelsey, 2-1. The win over the Blue was the first for the Lyons since the 2004 season. Senior forward Cassidy Robinson (Lebanon, N.H.) was critical, scoring the game-winner against Wellesley and assisting on both tallies against the Cougars. MHC (6-7; 2-3 NEWMAC) returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Coast Guard for a 7pm contest. The Lyons conclude the week on Saturday with a 2pm contest at Wheaton. TENNIS

Mount Holyoke beat Sprignfield by an 8-1 margin, but fell 9-0 in the NEWMAC regular season finale at Babson. The Lyons all but secured the fifth-seed in the upcoming NEWMAC Tournament. Final pairings will be determined once several rained out matches conclude on Thursday. Mount Holyoke (6-5; 4-4 NEWMAC) is back in action this weekend when it co-hosts the 2014 NEWITT Tournament. The action begins on Friday and runs through Sunday.

 

VOLLEYBALL

The Lyons suffered a 3-0 loss to Coast Guard in their only match last week. MHC returns to action on Tuesday in a 7pm match at Springfield. The squad (2-16; 0-7 NEWMAC) closes out the week on Saturday at the NEWMAC/Little East Challenge, where they will face Plymouth State (11am) and Keene State (12:30pm).

 

CROSS COUNTRY

The Lyons finished 33rd at the 2014 Open New England Championships on Saturday and for the fourth straight meet, sophomore Becca Rogers (Tucson, Ariz.) paced the way. She finished 103rd overall of 262 runners in the 5k event. Mount Holyoke is back in action this weekend when it hosts the 2014 Seven Sisters Championship at the Kendall Sports and Dance Complex. Action begins at 11am.

 

GOLF

Mount Holyoke placed fourth overall in a field of nine teams at the Ann S. Batchelder Invitational at Wellesley. Sophomore June Conti (Amenia, N.Y.) paced the effort, finishing fourth overall in the fall-concluding meet for Mount Holyoke. The Lyons will return to action in the spring.

 

RIDING

The Lyons were idle last week, but return to action on Saturday with a show at Williams College.

 

ROWING

The Lyons kicked-off their 2014-15 campaign on Saturday at the Quinsigamond Snake Regatta. Three of MHC's four boats finished in the top 15 at the event, including the varsity eight 'A' boat, which was fifth of 26 boats. The Lyons now focus their attention toward next Sunday as they head to Boston to compete at the 2014 Head of the Charles Regatta.
