Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Nov. 10th

FIELD HOCKEY

The #16 Lyons posted a 1-0 win over MIT in the NEWMAC Semifinals on Saturday, but could not hold off top-seeded Wellesley, falling by a 1-0 margin in overtime in the conference championship game. Sophomore goalie Liz DiCesare (Westford, Mass.) posted eight saves on the weekend, including seven in the loss to the Blue. Mount Holyoke was selected for an At-Large bid into the NCAA Tournament on Sunday evening for the second straight season.

The Lyons (16-3) host Husson University on Wednesday in the First Round. Game time will be at 4pm on the Turf Field. The winner of Wednesday's game will advance to the Second Round, where they will square off against the defending national champion, Polar Bears of Bowdoin College. RIDING

The Lyons were idle last week, but return to action on November 22 when it hosts its second Home Show of the year.

 

CROSS COUNTRY

The cross country team was idle over the past week, but returns to action on Saturday when they compete at the NCAA New England Regional Championship, hosted by Williams College. Action gets underway in the women's race at 12:30pm.

 

SWIMMING & DIVING

The Lyons fell to Division II Assumption on Friday evening (178-106), but rebounded on the road the next day with a 175-81 win at the University of Saint Joseph. Junior Cathleen Pruden (Raleigh, N.C.). paced the way for the Lyons, touching the wall first for seven victories, including a school record and an NCAA B Cut, over the two meets. Mount Holyoke (1-1) returns to action on Saturday with a 1pm meet at Westfield State.

 

SQUASH

The Lyons were idle last week, but are back in action on November 15-16 when they travel to Middletown, Conn., to compete at the Weselyan Round Robin. A full game schedule can be found at http://athletics.mtholyoke.edu/sports/wsquash/2014-15/schedule.

 

BASKETBALL

Under the direction of 11th-year head coach Michelle Scecina, the Lyons kick-off their 2014-15 season next weekend at the 2014 Castleton State College Tip-Off. MHC will face the host Spartans on Saturday at 2pm, before battling Elms College on Sunday at 12pm.
