Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Oct. 28th

 

SOCCER

The Lyons suffered a 2-0 loss at Springfield in their only contest last week. Mount Holyoke (5-11; 0-87 NEWMAC) returns to action with a pair of home contests this week, beginning Tuesday against Smith at the MHC Soccer Field (7pm). The Lyons then host WPI in the regular season finale for both teams on Saturday (2pm).

FIELD HOCKEY

The field hockey team went 2-0 last week, posting wins against WPI (3-0) and #19 MIT (6-2). First year forward Charlotte Wagner (West Chester, Pa.) had a brilliant week, tallying two goals with five assists. The #18 Lyons (14-1; 6-1 NEWMAC) are back in action this week with a pair of games, starting on Tuesday with a non-conference tilt against Westfield State at home at 7pm. MHC then wraps-up its regular season schedule against Wheaton on Saturday at the Turf Field at 12pm.

TENNIS

Mount Holyoke suffered a 6-0 loss at Babson in the NEWMAC Quarterfinals last week. The Lyons concluded the 2013 portion of their season with a 6-6 record, going 4-4 in conference play. MHC is now idle until the Spring.

VOLLEYBALL

The Lyons defeated Elms (3-0) last week, but fell against Westfield State (3-1), Colby (3-1) and Bridgewater State (3-1) in Volleyball Hall of Fame Tournament action over the weekend.  Senior outside hitter Martina Kneifel (Oro Valley, Ariz.) was named to the Hall of Fame All-Tournament Team for the second straight season after pounding in 45 kills over the three tournament contests.

Mount Holyoke (10-16; 0-8 NEWMAC) is back in action on Tuesday when it travels to Smith for a 7pm NEWMAC tilt. The Lyons then close out the regular season on Saturday when they travel to WPI for a 1pm contest against the Engineers.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Lyons was idle last week and returns to action on Sunday, when it competes at the NEWMAC Championships, hosted by Babson College.

RIDING

MHC posted another victory last week, capturing top honors at the UMass Horse Show. Junior Anne Waldo (White Lake, Mich.) took home Intermediate High Point Rider and first year Allee Platanitis (Granville, Mass.) claimed Novice High Point Rider and Reserve High Point Rider honors.  The Lyons return to action on Saturday when they compete at the Amherst Horse Show. 

CREW

The Mount Holyoke crew team powered their way to a second place finish at the 2013 Seven Sisters Championship Regatta last week. The Lyons finished just two points behind Wellesley and were paced by first place finishes from the Novice and second Novice boats at the event.

Juniors Hannah Arbach (Springfield, Va.) and Sarah Fleming (Elk Grove, Calif.)were named to the All-Championship Varsity Team, while first year Briana Chace (Richmond, R.I.) was selected to the All-Novice Team.  Mount Holyoke concluded the fall portion of its racing season at the event and will return to action in the Spring.

SWIMMING & DIVING

Under the direction of 16th-year head coach Dave Allen, the Mount Holyoke swimming & diving team takes to the pool for its first competition of the season on Saturday. The Lyons host the University of St. Joseph in dual meet action, beginning at 1pm in the MHC Natatorium. Mount Holyoke is coming off an outstanding season in which it finished fifth at the NEWMAC Championships, paced by the conference Rookie of the Year, Cathleen Pruden.
