The #17 Lyons had an outstanding week, going 3-0 with wins over WPI (1-0 in OT), Western New England (4-1) and MIT (3-2 in OT). Senior captain Kirsten Kilburn (North Branford, Conn.) had four goals, including two game-winners, with two assists for 10 points to lead MHC offensively. Mount Holyoke (13-2; 6-1 NEWMAC) concludes its regular season this week with a pair of games on the road. The Lyons travel to Westfield State on Tuesday at 7pm and then head to Wheaton on Saturday for a 12pm game. The Lyons won their home show last weekend, taking home blue ribbons in 19 of 25 classes on the day. First year Mollie Kowalchik (Loveland, Ohio) was named High Point Rider while Anna Rzchowski (Madison, Wisc.) claimed Reserve High Point Rider honors. Additionally, Rzchowski also took home the Novice High Point Rider award and first year Emily Holowczak (South Windsor, Conn.) was Reserve Novice High Point Rider with her blue ribbon over fences and second-place finish on the flat. The Lyons are back in action on Saturday when they compete at the Amherst Horse Show at 9am.
The Lyons finished second of five schools at Saturday's Seven Sisters Regatta, hosted by Wellesley. MHC three boats finish second on the afternoon, including the first varsity eight, the first novice eight and the second varsity eight. Additionally, junior Rosalind Waltz-Peters, sophomore Molly Lapointe and first year Kimberly Ho were all recognized to the All-Regatta Team. The rowing team has now concluded its fall season and will return again in the spring.
Mount Holyoke defeated Wheaton by a 5-2 margin on Wednesday in the NEWMAC Quarterfinals to advance to the Semifinal Round for the fifth time in school history and the first since 2006. The Lyons, who were the fifth-seed, then squared off against top-seeded MIT in the NEWMAC Semis, falling by a 5-0 margin. Mount Holyoke concludes its fall season with a 7-6 mark, going 4-4 in conference play.
The Lyons shouldered a 4-1 loss to Springfield in their only contest last week. MHC (6-10; 2-6 NEWMAC) makes its last push toward the playoffs this week, traveling to Smith on Tuesday for a 3:30pm NEWMAC contest. The Lyons close out the week and the regular season with another critical conference game at WPI on Saturday at 4pm. The Lyons defeated Elms (3-1), but suffered losses to Connecticut College (3-0) and Worcester State (3-0) to close out the week. Junior Emma Sweeting (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.) recorded 38 kills and 35 digs on the week to lead the Lyons offense. MHC (3-21; 0-8 NEWMAC) is back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Smith at 7pm. The Lyons then close out the week on Saturday, welcoming WPI at 1pm as they also honor their four seniors.
The Lyons were idle last week, but return to the course on Saturday. MHC will travel the short distance to Northampton to compete at the 2014 NEWMAC Championships, hosted at Smith College. Action gets underway at 12pm for the women's race. The men's race will begin at 11am.
The Lyons open the 2014-15 season on Saturday, traveling to Northampton to compete in the Smith College Relays. Action gets underway at 12:15pm. MHC is coming off a season which saw it post a record of 6-4 in dual meet matches, while also placing sixth at the NEWMAC Championships. Highlighting last season was Cathleen Pruden (Raleigh, N.C.), who was a National All-American in the 400-individual medley (4th), as well as a National Academic All-America Third Team selection.
Under the direction of third-year head coach Erin Robson, the Lyons squash team kicks-off their season on Saturday in Eastern Massachusetts. Playing at the courts of Harvard University, MHC will take on Boston College (9am), Wellesley (1pm) and Virginia (5pm). The Lyons are coming off a 2013-14 season which saw them go 10-12 overall.
