Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Apr. 7th

 

RIDING

The Lyons finished second at the Zone 1 Championships to claim its spot in the upcoming IHSA National Championships. Among the outstanding efforts at Zones was senior Felicia Harrsch (Lansdale, Pa.), began Saturday's event with a beautiful round in Individual Open Fences and followed with an outstanding test to claim first place and a berth at Nationals. Overall, four riders qualified as individuals for the National Championships, which will take place at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg, Pa., from May 1-4.

TRACK & FIELD

The Lyons saw senior Dana Fry (Tempe, Ariz.) win the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a school record time of 12:17.24 to pace the way at the non-team scoring Wesleyan Classic last weekend. Mount Holyoke returns to action on Saturday when it competes at the Smith College Inviational in Northampton at 11am.

LACROSSE

MHC went 2-0 last week with wins over Western Connecticut State (21-14) and Wellesley (11-9). The Lyons were paced by junior captain Kirsten Kilburn (North Branford, Conn.), who recorded a team-best seven goals, including four against Wellesley. Mount Holyoke (6-5; 1-2 NEWMAC) returns to action on Tuesday, hosting the Game of the Week against Emerson at 6pm. That contest also marks Senior Day for the Lyons three graduating seniors. MHC closes out the week on Saturday in a 1pm contest at Springfield. Live stat and video links for both games can be found HERE.

TENNIS

MHC (8-7) powered its way to a 6-3 victory at Connecticut College on Saturday, paced by singles victories in flights three through six. The Lyons return to action on this weekend as they travel to Bryn Mawr to compete in the 2014 Seven Sisters Championship. Action begins on Saturday as MHC takes on Vassar (10:30am) and the host Owls (1:30pm). The tournament concludes on Sunday with the Lyons facing Wellesley (10:30am) and Smith (1:30pm).

CREW

The Lyons had an outstanding day on the water last Sunday, competing at Tufts against several strong opponents. MHC was led by the varsity eight boat, which opened with a second-place showing to Tufts with a time of 7:39.5 before defeating Hamilton in the Petite Final with a time of 7:40.5. Mount Holyoke is back in the water on Saturday when it travels to Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester to face Clark. The Lyons then battle Clark, Simmons, UMass-Lowell and Franklin & Marshall on Sunday.
