Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Sep. 22nd

 

FIELD HOCKEY

The #17 field hockey team saw first year midfielder Sophie Perekslis (Sheffield, Mass.) score with just 3:29 remaining to lift the Lyons to a 1-0 victory over #18 Williams in their only game last week. Sophomore goalie Liz DiCesare (Westford, Mass.) was also outstanding, stopping 14 shots, including nine in the second half. Mount Holyoke (5-0) returns to action on Tuesday in a 7pm match at Wesleyan. The Lyons conclude the week on Saturday, opening NEWMAC play at Wellesley at 12pm. SOCCER

The Lyons went 1-1 last week, defeating Western New England, 2-1 in double-overtime, before falling to Babson, 3-2 in the NEWMAC opener. Senior Cassidy Robinson (Lebanon, N.H.) played the hero for the Lyons, scoring all four goals, including the overtime game-winner that game Mount Holyoke its first-ever win over the Golden Bears. MHC (3-4; 1-0 NEWMAC) is back in action on Tuesday at 7:30pm, traveling to Troy, N.Y., for a match at Rensselaer. The Lyons close out the week with a NEWMAC game at home against Emerson at 1pm. TENNIS

Mount Holyoke suffered a 9-0 loss in its only match last week at defending NEWMAC champion, MIT. The Lyons (3-4; 1-3 NEWMAC) return to the court on Tuesday, traveling to Smith for a 5pm match. MHC closes out the week at the ITA New England Regional Tournament, hosted by Williams College.

 

VOLLEYBALL

The Lyons suffered a pair of losses to open the NEWMAC season, falling at Babson (3-0) and Emerson (3-0). MHC (2-9; 0-2 NEWMAC) returns home on Tuesday to battle MIT at 7pm. The Lyons then travel to Clark on Thursday for a 7pm contest, before closing out the week at home on Saturday against Wheaton at 1pm.

 

CROSS COUNTRY

The Lyons were idle last week and return to action on Saturday when they compete at the Purple Valley Classic at Williams (1pm).

 

GOLF

Mount Holyoke finished fifth of 15 teams at its own MHC Invitaitonal last weekend. Senior captain Madi Mendiola (San Diego, Calif.) finished sixth overall to lead the effort for the Lyons, who shot a school record 315 in the Second Round of action. Mount Holyoke is back on the links this weekend, traveling to Vermont to compete at the Middlebury Invitational. Action begins on Saturday and runs through Sunday.

 

RIDING

The Lyons had an outstanding debut to the 2014-15 season, finishing third of 18 teams at the Preseason Tournament of Champions, hosted by Goucher College. Three riders posted victory on the day, including junior Genevieve Couldwell (Salt Lake City, Utah), who won in Novice Fences. Mount Holyoke is idle this week, but returns to action on October 4 when it opens its regular show season at the Smith College Show.
