The field hockey team went 3-0 last week on its way to winning the 2015 NEWMAC Championship! The fifth-seeded Lyons defeated fourth-seeded MIT, 2-1, in the quarterfinals, bested top-seeded Babson, 1-0 in double-overtime of the semifinals, before powering past second-seeded Wellesley, 2-1 in a shootout of the title game. Junior goalie Liz DiCesare (Westford, Mass./Bishop Guertin) was named the Tournament's Most Outstanding Player after posting a season-high 19 saves in the championship game for a grand total of 45 stops during the tournament.
Mount Holyoke (15-6) earned the automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament and will face off against Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday in Hoboken, N.J., in the First Round. Game time is set for 5pm. Additional live stats and video information will be announced later on Monday.
The Lyons saw their outstanding season come to an end on Tuesday, shouldering a 1-0 loss to Babson in the NEWMAC Quarterfinals. Junior goalie Zoe Marshall (Mississauga, Ont.) made 10 saves for MHC, which finished its season with a 9-7-3 record. The Lyons went 4-3-3 in NEWMAC play, earning their first conference tournament berth since 2009.
MHC is back in action on Saturday when it heads to New London, Conn., to take part in the 2015 NCAA New England Regional Championship. The event will be hosted by Connecticut College at Harkness Park.
The Lyons return to competition on Saturday when they compete at the UMass/Amherst Show in Hadley.
The Lyons posted a 146-111 victory over the University of New England in their home opener last weekend. MHC was paced by a four-win effort from senior Cathleen Pruden (Raleigh, N.C.), who also achieved an NCAA B Cut in the 400-IM. Mount Holyoke (1-1 dual meet) returns to the pool this weekend when it hosts Westfield State on Saturday at 1pm. Fans can see the meet live by clicking HERE.
Under the guidance of 12th-year head coach Michelle Scecina, the Lyons open their 2015-16 season on Friday at the Brandeis Tip-Off Tournament. MHC will battle the host Judges at 6pm and will play in either the championship (3pm) or consolation (1pm) game on Saturday.
