Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Nov. 16th

ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS

The Lyons field hockey and soccer teams placed a combined six student-athletes on their respective NEWMAC All-Conference Teams. Field hockey saw senior Sarah LaQuerre (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) and junior Ruvimbo Mushavi (Harare, Zimbabwe) named to the First Team, while junior Liz DiCesare (Westford, Mass.) was a Second Team selection. In soccer, first year Sara Sanaú Ruiz (Zaragoza, Spain) and junior Zoe Marshall (Mississauga, Ont.) earned First Team recognition, while senior Ashleigh Hartsock (Stevensville, Md.) was a Second Team honoree.

FIELD HOCKEY

The field hockey team concluded its outstanding fall season on Wednesday, shouldering a 3-1 loss to Stevens Institute of Technology in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament. The Lyons finished the season with a 15-7 overall mark, going 5-3 in NEWMAC play on its way to winning the NEWMAC Championship and a third NCAA Tournament appearance.

 

 

CROSS COUNTRY

MHC finished 19th of 57 competing teams at the 2015 NCAA New England Regional Championship. The Lyons were paced by senior Elizabeth DeLeon (Boise, Idaho), who placed 77th out of 390 participating runners. MHC's schedule concluded at this year's event, NCAA Championship selections are expected to be announced early this week.

RIDING

The Lyons captured victory at the UMass Amherst Show on Saturday. Leading the way for MHC was sophomore Haley Lamoureux (Holliston, Mass.), who was named the overall high point rider and novice high point rider. Mount Holyoke returns to action next Saturday when it hosts the final regular show of the semester at 9am at the MHC Equestrian Center.

 

SWIMMING & DIVING

Powered by four first place finishes from junior Anne Kuenning (Bow, N.H.), the Lyons defeated Westfield State by a 163-119 margin on Saturday. Kuenning won the 50 and 200-back events, while also helping two relays to top times. The Lyons (1-1) return to action on Saturday, traveling to Western Connecticut State for a 12pm dual meet.

 

BASKETBALL

The Lyons suffered a tough start to their season, falling to Brandeis and Lasell at the Brandeis Tip-Off Tournament. Senior captain Genelle Green (Windsor, Conn.) led the offensive effort, averaging 15.0 points and 9.5 rebounds per contest. MHC (0-2) is back on the court on Wednesday when it hosts Worcester State at 7pm. The Lyons close out the week on Saturday in a 1pm game at Norwich University. SQUASH

Mount Holyoke shouldered a tough 8-1 loss to Wellesley in the season opener on Saturday. Junior Amanda Lee (Windsor, Conn.) notched the lone win for the Lyons from the ninth position. MHC (0-1) returns to action on Friday when it competes at Williams College at 7pm.
