Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Oct.20th

 

FIELD HOCKEY

The #19 Lyons posted a 5-2 win at Babson in their only game last week. Senior captain Kirsten Kilburn (North Branford, Conn.) made history with her three goals against the Beavers, becoming the program's all-time leader in career points with 161. Last week, she etched her name into the record books, tying the all-time program record for career assists (49). Mount Holyoke (10-2; 4-1 NEWMAC) opens a busy week on Tuesday when it travels to WPI for a 4:30pm contest. The Lyons are then at Western New England on Thursday (7pm) and conclude the week on Saturday, hosting MIT at 1pm. That contest marks the final regular season home game for the Lyons seven seniors. SOCCER

The Lyons suffered losses at Coast Guard (1-0) and Wheaton (5-0) last week. Sophomore goalie Zoe Marshall (Mississauga, Ont.) posted 15 saves in the loss to Wheaton, while senior netminder Mackenzie Randall (Harwinton, Conn.) had 10 stops against the Bears. MHC (6-9; 2-5 NEWMAC) returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Springfield at 6pm. That game will see the Lyons seven seniors honored. TENNIS

Mount Holyoke saw four pairs in action last weekend at the 2014 NEWITT Tournament. Sophomores Mira Murali (Fall City, Wash.) and Alexa Colas (Teaneck, N.J.) advanced to the quarterfinals of the C Draw before bowing out.  Mount Holyoke (6-5; 4-4 NEWMAC) is back in action on Wednesday in the NEWMAC Tournament Quarterfinals. The Lyons, who are the fifth-seed, will travel to Wheaton, the fourth-seed, for a 3pm match. The winner advances to Saturday's Semifinals against top-seeded MIT at Babson's courts.

 

VOLLEYBALL

The Lyons shouldered losses to Springfield, Plymouth State and Keene State last week. Junior Emma Sweeting (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.) posted 13 kills for the Lyons against the Panthers and Owls during the NEWMAC/Little East Challenge. MHC (2-19; 0-8 NEWMAC) returns to action on Thursday, hosting Elms at 6pm. The Lyons then travel to Connecticut College on Saturday to take on the hosts Camels (12pm) and Worcester State (2pm).

 

CROSS COUNTRY

The Lyons hosted the 2014 Seven Sisters Championship last week, finishing fourth overall amongst the seven teams. MHC, which placed just one point behind third-place Smith, saw sophomore Becca Rogers (Tucson, Ariz.) pace the way. She finished sixth overall to earn All-Seven Sisters recognition.

 

RIDING

The Lyons finished in a tie for first overall at the Williams College Show last weekend. First year Anna Rzchowski (Madison, Wisc.) made a splash in her IHSA debut, earning both High Point and Novice High Point honors. Mount Holyoke returns to action on Saturday when it hosts the MHC Horse Show at the MHC Equestrian Center.

 

ROWING

The Lyons posted a 16th-place finish at the 50th Annual Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston last weekend. MHC recorded a time of 18:29.255 in the Collegiate Eights event, finishing ahead of NEWMAC-rivals WPI, Coast Guard and Smith. Mount Holyoke returns to Boston next weekend when they compete in the 2014 Seven Sisters Championship, hosted by Wellesley College.
