Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Sept. 8th

SOCCER

The Lyons opened the week with a 4-0 victory at Lyndon State, but fell to Colby-Sawyer by a 3-0 margin to wrap up play on Saturday. Sophomore Ashleigh Hartsock (Stevensville, Md.) recorded a goal and an assists against the Hornets.

Mount Holyoke (2-1-0) is back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Amherst at 7pm on the MHC Soccer Field. The Lyons then head to Southern Vermont for a 1pm match on Saturday.

FIELD HOCKEY

The field hockey team moved to 3-0 on the season after defeating Nichols (7-1) and Rensselaer (3-2) last week. Junior midfielder Diana Banmann (Hannover, Germany), the defending NEWMAC Offensive Player of the Week, kept up her intensity as she scored four goals in two games, including the game-winner against RPI. The Lyons (3-0) are back in action on Tuesday when they host Amherst at 7pm on the Turf Field. MHC continues its homestand on Saturday, welcoming Western New England University at 1pm.

TENNIS

Mount Holyoke dropped a 6-3 decision at Simmons, but rebounded to defeat the University of Saint Joseph by a 9-0 score. The Lyons closed out the week with an 8-1 loss to Wheaton in the NEWMAC opener. Senior captain Eman Malik (Karachi, Pakistan) continued her outstanding play, improving to 4-0 in fifth flight singles action. Mount Holyoke (2-2) is back on the court on Saturday when it travels to Emerson for a 1pm conference tilt.

 

VOLLEYBALL

The Lyons defeated Newbury by a 3-0 score and then posted victories over Mitchell (3-0) and the University of Saint Joseph (3-1) to improve to 5-0 on the season. Sophomore outside hitter Emma Sweeting (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.) led the way with a combined 32 kills over the three matches. Mount Holyoke (5-0) is back on court on Tuesday in a 7pm match at MCLA. The Lyons then open their home schedule with a tri-match on Saturday as they open the day against Westfield State at 11am. MHC will play UMass-Dartmouth at 3pm with Westfield State and UMass-Dartmouth facing off in a neutral game at 1pm.

CROSS COUNTRY

The cross country team kicked off its 2013 season last Saturday at the Smith Invitational. The Lyons finished 11th of 18 teams at the event, paced by junior Dana Fry (Avon, Conn.), who finished 13th of 204 runners in the 5k race. Mount Holyoke returns to action on Saturday when it competes at the Franklin Pierce Invitational at 10am.

 

GOLF

Led by third-year head coach Tim Walko, the MHC golf team opens its 2013-14 season this weekend at the NYU Invitational. Action begins on Saturday and runs through Sunday. The Lyons look to build off solid young talent as this year's roster features three returners and eight newcomers.
