The Lyons defeated Smith, 1-0, but fell to WPI, 3-0 to conclude its 2013 campaign last week. Junior Sana Barclay (Takoma Park, Md.) netted the game-winner over the Pioneers. Mount Holyoke finished with a 6-12-0 record, going 1-9-0 in the NEWMAC.
Winners of eight straight contests, which is tied for the longest consecutive winning streak in program history, the #17 Lyons defeated Westfield State, 4-1 and Wheaton, 5-0 last week. MHC (16-1; 7-1 NEWMAC), which was paced by junior captain Kirsten Kilburn's (North Branford, Conn.) 10 points, earned the second-seed and a First Round bye in the NEWMAC Tournament. The Lyons will now face the winner of Tuesday's quarterfinal game between #3 MIT and #6 Smith on Saturday, beginning at 2pm at Wellesley College. The winner of Saturday's semifinals will move on to Sunday's championship which will be played at 1pm.
The Lyons posted a 3-0 loss at Smith, but concluded their season with a 3-1 win at WPI. Senior outside hitter Martina Kneifel (Oro Valley, Ariz.) paced MHC on the week, but shined in the win over the Engineers, pouring in a game-best 16 kills with 20 digs and seven service aces. Mount Holyoke finishes its 2013 season with an 11-17 mark and a 1-9 record in NEWMAC play.
The Lyons finished eighth of 11 teams at the NEWMAC Championships on Sunday at Franklin Park. Junior captain Dana Fry (Avon, Conn.) paced the MHC effort, finishing 30th of 154 runners in the 5k event. Mount Holyoke is idle this week, but is back on the course on November 16 when it competes at the NCAA New England Regional Championships, hosted by the University of Southern Maine.
MHC recorded a perfect score of 49 points to claim victory at the Amherst Horse Show on Saturday. The win marked the fourth straight of the season for the Lyons, who saw senior capatin Lexie Loher (Carlisle, Mass.) earn Reserve High Point Rider honors. Mount Holyoke is now idle until November 16 when it hosts the final regular season show of the fall at the MHC Equestrian Center.
The Lyons swimming & diving team took to the pool for its first competition of the season on Saturday, recording a 184-69 victory over the University of Saint Joseph. MHC saw a number of swimmers record victories in the meet, including sophomore Cathleen Pruden (Raleigh, N.C.), who was victorious in the 1000-free and the 200-back. Mount Holyoke (1-0) returns to action on Friday when it competes at Assumption in a 6:30pm dual meet.
Under the direction of second-year head coach Erin Robson, the Lyons squash team takes to the court for the first time this weekend as several players compete at the Maine Open, hosted by Bowdoin College. Action begins on Friday and runs through Sunday. MHC, which posted an 11-9 record a season ago, opens its home season on November 15 when it hosts Tufts at 5pm.
