Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Oct. 6th

 

FIELD HOCKEY

The #19 Lyons posted a 4-1 win over Clark in their only game last week. MHC was paced by first year Sophie Perekslis (Sheffield, Mass.), who scored two goals, including her team-leading eighth of the season.  Mount Holyoke (7-2; 1-1 NEWMAC) returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Smith at 7pm. SOCCER

The Lyons went 1-1 in a pair of road games last week, beating Bay Path (3-0), before falling at MIT (4-0). Senior Kara Singleton (Parsonsfield, Maine) tallied two goals in the win for the Lyons. MHC (4-7; 0-3 NEWMAC) returns to action on Tuesday, hosting Clark at 6pm. The Lyons wrap up the week with a 12pm game against Wellesley on Saturday. That contest is the Game of the Week! TENNIS

Mount Holyoke defeated Clark by an 8-1 margin in its only contest last week. The Lyons were paced by first year Ishita Tibrewal (Kolkata, India), and sophomores Mira Murali (Fall City, Wash.) and Alexa Colas (Teaneck, N.J.), all of whom recorded their seventh win of the season in singles action. Tibrewal has just one loss (7-1), while Murali and Colas each have two (7-2). Mount Holyoke (5-4; 4-3 NEWMAC) is back on the courts on Tuesday, hosting Springfield at 5pm. The Lyons close out the week on Saturday at Babson (1pm). 

 

VOLLEYBALL

The Lyons suffered losses to Wellesley, Salve Regina and Roger Williams last week. Junior Emma Sweeting (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.) had 25 kills for the Lyons. Mount Holyoke (2-15; 0-6 NEWMAC) hosts Coast Guard on Wednesday at 7pm in its only contest for the week.

 

CROSS COUNTRY

The Lyons finished fifth of 14 competing teams at the Keene State Invitational on Saturday and for the third straight meet, sophomore Becca Rogers (Tucson, Ariz.) paced the way. She finished fourth overall and first among all NEWMAC competitors in the 5k event. Mount Holyoke is back in action this weekend when it competes at the Open New England Championships at Franklin Park on Saturday. The women's sub-varsity race gets underway at 11am, while the women's varsity race is at 11:45am.

 

GOLF

Mount Holyoke placed sixth overall in a field of 15 teams at the Williams Fall Invitational last weekend. The Lyons were led by senior captain Madi Mendiola (San Diego, Calif.), who finished 11th overall at the meet. MHC concludes its fall schedule this weekend, competing at the Ann S. Batchelder Invitational at Wellesley on Saturday and Sunday.

 

RIDING

The Lyons kicked-off their regular season schedule with a win at the Smith College Show last Saturday. MHC edged out UMass by a point for the victory, while also seeing four riders qualify for Regionals in March. Mount Holyoke is idle this week, but returns to action on October 18 with a show at Williams College.

 

ROWING

Under the direction of first-year head coach Heather Putnam, the rowing team opens its 2014-15 season on Saturday at the Snake Regatta hosted on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester. Action begins at 10:05 am with the women's varsity eight race. Complete race times, and results after the events, can be found HERE.
