Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Jan. 27th

 

RIDING

The Lyons were back in action on Saturday, competing at the Winter Tournament of Champions, hosted by the University of Mary Washington in Virginia. MHC had a number of strong efforts to finish fifth overall. In the series, which also included the Preseason and the Holiday Tournaments, the Lyons placed third. The squad returns to action on February 22 when they compete at the UMass Horse Show.

SWIMMING & DIVING

Mount Holyoke (5-4; dual meet) shouldered a 183-110 loss to Wellesley last weekend. Sophomore Cathleen Pruden (Raleigh, N.C.) paced the effort for the Lyons, recording three individual victories. MHC also honored its six seniors in a pre-meet ceremony.

The Lyons are now idle until February 8 when they travel to Northampton for a 1pm dual meet at Smith.

SQUASH

The #22 squash team (7-8) went 1-1 last weekend, defeating #24 Colby, 7-2, before falling to #20 Bowdoin, 6-3. Mount Holyoke returns to action on Saturday at the Seven Sisters Championship, hosted by Smith. The Lyons look to win their eighth straight championship title and will face the host Pioneers (9am) and Wellesley (10am).

BASKETBALL

MHC went 1-1 in NEWMAC action last week, falling to Wheaton, 56-55, before edging Clark, 61-59. Junior forward Amber Legare (Chicopee, Mass.) played the hero in the victory, sinking the game-winning layup with two seconds remaining in the game. She finished the contest with a game-best 23 points.

The Lyons (5-13; 2-11 NEWMAC) are back on the court on Wednesday in a 7pm game at Smith. The team will close out the week on Saturday, hosting MIT at 1pm at the Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium. Links to live stats for this week's action can be found HERE.

TRACK & FIELD

Mount Holyoke had an outstanding effort at the Smith Benyon Invitational last weekend. The Lyons placed sixth of 10 teams at the meet, led by a win in the 20lb-weight throw by senior Kristina Weld (Warwick, Mass.). Additionally, the Distance Medley Relay team posted victory and currently have the 22nd fastest time in Division III. MHC returns to action on Saturday in a 1pm meet at the University of Southern Maine.
