Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Dec. 8th

RIDING

The Lyons competed at the Holiday Tournament of Champions in Coolville, Ohio last weekend. Highlighting the action for MHC was first year Mollie Kowalchik (Loveland, Ohio) and senior Heather Zadra (Laguna Hills, Calif.), who finished fourth and 10th, respectively, in the Collegiate Medal competition. Mount Holyoke is now idle until January 24th when it heads to Virginia to compete in the Winter Tournament of Champions, which is the third and final event in the series.

SWIMMING & DIVING

The Lyons (3-1) saw sophomore Anne Kuenning (Bow, N.H.) post a school record trifecta at the 2014 Gompei Invitational at WPI last weekend. She became the school record holder in all three backstroke events, finishing third in the 200-back and fifth in both the 50 and 100-back during the meet. As a team, the Lyons were fifth of 12 schools. The Lyons are now idle until 2015 when they return to the pool to face Clark and Wheaton in tri-meet action in Worcester. The meet, which will take place at Clark, begins at 12:30pm.

SQUASH

The Lyons posted an 8-1 win against Smith and then sent four players to the Division III National Tournament at Wesleyan last week. Mount Holyoke was paced by senior Samantha Rosado (Meriden, Conn.), who posted a win in the second spot on the ladder against the Pioneers and then went on to finish 2-2 at Nationals, including advancing to the B draw consolation semifinals. Mount Holyoke (4-4) is now idle for the remainder of 2014 and returns to action on January 15 when it hosts Bates College in an 11am contest at the MHC Squash Courts.

BASKETBALL

The Lyons suffered losses to Albertus Magnus (75-65) and MIT (75-56) last week. Senior forward Amber Legare (Chicopee, Mass.) posted her fifth double-double of the season against MIT, it was also her fourth in as many games. MHC (1-7) is back on the court on Tuesday when it hosts its final contest of 2014 against Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts at 7pm. Live options for the home game can be found at http://athletics.mtholyoke.edu/sports/wbkb/2014-15/schedule.

TRACK & FIELD

Mount Holyoke got its 2014-15 season underway last weekend, competing at the non-scoring Smith Winter Classic in Northampton. The Lyons were paced by a number of solid events, including junior Camille Coklow (Chicago, Ill.), who posted victory in her signature indoor event, the 60-meter dash. She also finished fourth in the 200-m dash and helped the 4x200 relay team to fourth as well. The Lyons are now idle until January 17 when they return to action at the Tufts Invitational. Action at that meet gets underway at 11am.
