Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Oct. 7th

 

SOCCER

The Lyons wrapped up a busy week of action, going 1-2-0 overall. MHC posted a 3-2 double overtime win against MCLA, but fell to Amherst (4-0) and #20 MIT (2-0). Mount Holyoke (5-6; 0-3 NEWMAC) is back in action on Tuesday when it travels to Clark for a 6pm start. The Lyons wrap-up the week with a 1pm game at Wellesley on Saturday.

FIELD HOCKEY

The field hockey team improved to 9-1 overall and 1-1 in the NEWMAC last week with a 6-1 victory at Clark. Junior captain Kirsten Kilburn (North Branford, Conn.) paced the effort, scoring two goals and assisting on two others. The Lyons are back in action on Tuesday with a critical 4:30pm game at Smith. MHC wraps-up the week with a 4pm contest on the road at Springfield.

TENNIS

Mount Holyoke recorded victory in its lone contest last week - a 9-0 win at Clark. It was a clean sweep for the Lyons, which saw all six players record multiple victories. MHC (5-4; 3-3 NEWMAC) returns to action on Tuesday with a 5pm match at Springfield. The Lyons then host Babson on Saturday at 1pm on the MHC Tennis Courts.

VOLLEYBALL

The Lyons fell in their only contest last week, shouldering a 3-1 loss to Wellesley. MHC is back in action this week, beginning on Tuesday with a 7pm game at Coast Guard. The Lyons then return home to host the 2013 Seven Sisters Championship at the Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Lyons took to the course at the Keene State College Invitational last weekend. Junior Dana Fry (Avon, Conn.) led the way for Mount Holyoke, placing 12th in a field of 152 competitors. Mount Holyoke returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Boston, Mass., to compete at the Open New England Championships.

GOLF

The MHC golf team posted another outstanding effort last weekend, finishing fifth of 15 teams at the Williams Fall Invitational. Junior captain Madi Mendiola (San Diego, Calif.) led the way, posting her first top-three of the season (3rd overall) with a score of 154. The Lyons return to action this weekend, competing in their final meet of the fall at the Ann S. Batchelder Invitational, hosted by Wellesley College on Saturday and Sunday.

RIDING

MHC posted a near perfect score last weekend as it won the Smith Horse Show to open the regular season slate. The Lyons, which got their defense of their Zone and Regional titles off to the right start, were led by Lexie Loher (Carlisle, Mass.) and Anne Waldo (White Lake, Mich.). Loher was named the High Point Rider of the show, while Waldo was the Reserve High Point rider. MHC returns to action this weekend when it hosts its own show at the Mount Holyoke Equestrian Center on Saturday.

CREW

The Mount Holyoke crew team opens its 2013-14 season on Saturday, competing at the Quinsigamond Snake Regatta in Worcester, Mass. Under the direction of long-time head coach Jeanne Friedman, the Lyons look to make a statement in the conference standings.
