Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Sept. 21st

 

FIELD HOCKEY

The field hockey team shouldered a 2-0 loss at Williams before defeating Thomas by a 5-1 margin at home. Junior forward Charlotte Wagner (West Chester, Pa.) paced the Lyons in the victory, scoring four of the team's five goals. Mount Holyoke (3-3) returns to action on Tuesday when it welcomes Wesleyan for a 7pm non-conference tilt. The Lyons conclude the week with their NEWMAC home opener against Wellesley at 12pm.

SOCCER

The Lyons posted a 1-0-1 week, defeating Western New Englandy by a 3-2 margin, before tying Babson, 0-0 in double overtime, to open the NEWMAC schedule. First year forward Sara Sanaú Ruiz (Zaragoza, Spain) paced the Lyons once again, scoring two of the squad's three goals on the week. Mount Holyoke (3-2-1; 0-0-1 NEWMAC) is back on the pitch on Tuesday, hosting RPI at 6pm. The Lyons close out the week with a 12pm conference road game at Emerson.

TENNIS

Mount Holyoke shouldered a loss to MIT (9-0) in its only game last week. The Lyons are back on the courts on Tuesday, traveling to Northampton for a 5pm match at Smith. MHC then heads to Middlebury to take part in the 2015 ITA Northeast Regionals. Matches will be held Friday through Sunday.

 

VOLLEYBALL

The Lyons suffered an 0-2 week with NEWMAC losses to Babson and Emerson. Senior captain Emma Sweeting (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.) recorded 16 kills and 19 digs over the two matches. MHC (5-3; 0-2 NEWMAC) returns to action on Tuesday in a 7pm match at MIT. The Lyons return home on Thursday to host Clark at 7pm, before concluding the week on Saturday at Wheaton at 1pm.

CROSS COUNTRY

MHC was idle last week and returns to action on Saturday when it competes at the Purple Valley Classic, hosted by Williams College.

RIDING

The Lyons riding team opened its 2015-16 campaign on Saturday at the Preseason Tournament of Champions. MHC, which had two teams in action, saw Team "Lyon" placed third overall (30 points), while Team "Mary" earned fifth (27 points). Highlighting the day was first year Grace Tice (West Simsbury, Conn.), who was champion of the Pre-Season Tournament of Champions Medal Class - out of twenty riders. Mount Holyoke is now idle until October 3 when it opens its regular season schedule at the Smith College Show.


GOLF

Mount Holyoke opened its 2015-16 season last weekend, finishing seventh of 12 schools at the 2015 NYU Invitational. The Lyons were paced by junior captain June Conti (Amenia, N.Y.), who finished in a tie for 19th overall. MHC is back on the links this weekend, hosting the 2015 MHC Invitational at The Orchards Golf Club. Action begins on Saturday and runs through Sunday.
