Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Sept. 7th

 

FIELD HOCKEY

The field hockey team opened 2015 last week, going 1-1 in their debut. Junior forward Charlotte Wagner (West Chester, Pa.) powered the Lyons to a 9-0 victory at Nichols, scoring four goals, but MHC shouldered a 2-1 loss to RPI to conclude the week. Mount Holyoke (1-1) returns to action this week beginning Tuesday when it hosts Amherst at 7:15pm. The Lyons then play at Castleton State on Saturday at 1pm.

SOCCER

The Lyons opened their season last week, going 1-1 with a 2-1 win at Southern Vermont and a 4-1 loss at Nichols. Three different players scored during the week, including the first collegiate goals for first years Sara Sanaú Ruiz (Zaragoza, Spain) and Jamie Collings (Gainsville, Fla.). Mount Holyoke (1-1) is back on the pitch on Tuesday, hosting Amherst at 7pm. The Lyons will then welcome Bryn Mawr on Saturday at 12pm.

TENNIS

Mount Holyoke went undefeated to open its season with wins over UMass-Boston and NEWMAC-rival Wheaton - both by 9-0 margins. The Lyons saw a number of outstanding performances, including first year Ayame Yazawa (Tokyo, Japan), who went 2-0 at first doubles and first singles. Additionally, the shutout win for MHC was the first over Wheaton in program history, as well as the first regular season win since 2012 over the Lyons.

MHC (2-0) is back in action on Monday at 12pm in a match at Simmons. The Lyons return to NEWMAC play this weekend, traveling to Emerson on Saturday (1pm) and Wellesley on Sunday (11am).

 

VOLLEYBALL

The Lyons opened their season in undefeated fashion last week, taking down Elms (3-1), St. Joseph (3-2) and Medgar Evers (3-0). First year middle hitter Joy Maran (Santa Fe, N.M.) had an outstanding debut, notching 23 kills, a team-best 14 service aces, 29 digs and eight total blocks on the week. Mount Holyoke (3-0) is back in action on Tuesday, traveling to MCLA for a 7pm contest. The Lyons close out the week at home, hosting a tri-match at the Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium. MHC will battle Anna Maria at 11am and take on UMass-Dartmouth at 3pm. The AMCats and Corsairs will play the 1pm middle match.

CROSS COUNTRY

Under the direction of fifth-year head coach Jennifer Adams, the cross country team will open its season on Saturday at the Smith College Invitational. Meet time is set for 11am. The squad returns eight runners from last year’s team, which finished 19th overall at the NCAA Regional Championships.
