Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Nov. 3rd

FIELD HOCKEY

The #16 Lyons concluded their regular season last week, posting road wins over Westfield State (5-0) and Wheaton (6-2).  Senior captain Kirsten Kilburn (North Branford, Conn.) had two goals with two assists for six points to lead MHC offensively. Mount Holyoke (15-2; 7-1 NEWMAC) is back in action on Saturday when it travels to Wellesley to compete in the NEWMAC Semifinals. The second-seeded Lyons will face off against Tuesday's quarterfinal winner, between #3 MIT and #6 WPI, at 2pm. RIDING

The Lyons continued their winning ways last weekend, posting victory in the Amherst College Show. The win for MHC increased the Lyons lead to 20 points in the regional standings. Junior Genevieve Couldwell (Salt Lake City, Utah) was named the Reserve Intermediate High Point Rider at the event. Mount Holyoke is idle for the next two weeks, but returns to action on November 22 when it hosts its second Home Show of the year.

 

CROSS COUNTRY

The Lyons saw sophomore Becca Rogers (Tuscon, Ariz.) finish ninth overall and earn All-Conference honors at the NEWMAC Championships last weekend. As a team, Mount Holyoke was fifth of the 10 participating teams. MHC is idle this week, but returns to action on November 15 when it competes at the NCAA New England Regional Championship, hosted by Williams College. Action gets underway in the women's race at 12:30pm.

 

SWIMMING & DIVING

The Lyons opened the 2014-15 season on Saturday, traveling to Northampton to compete in the Smith College Relays. The meet, which featured a number of unique twists on relay events, saw several victories, including a five-relay wins from junior Cathleen Pruden (Raleigh, N.C.). Mount Holyoke opens its dual meet season on Friday when it hosts Assumption at 6:30pm at the MHC Natatorium. The Lyons then travel to the University of Saint Joseph on Saturday at 1pm.

 

SOCCER

The Lyons suffered losses to Smith (2-0) and WPI (1-0) to close out their 2014 campaign last week. Mount Holyoke concludes the season with a 6-12 mark, going 2-8 in NEWMAC play.

 

VOLLEYBALL

The Lyons posted a 3-0 victory over Smith, but fell in the season finale to WPI by a 3-0 margin. Junior Emma Sweeting (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.) had an outstanding effort in the victory, notching 21 kills. MHC concludes its season with a 4-22 overall record, going 1-9 in NEWMAC action.

 

SQUASH

Mount Holyoke kicked-off its 2014-15 season last weekend, posting a win over Boston College (6-3) before falling to Wellesley (7-2) and Virginia (9-0). The Lyons are back in action on November 15-16 when they travel to Middletown, Conn., to compete at the Weselyan Round Robin.
