Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Oct. 19th

2015 ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME INDUCTION WEEKEND

As a part of MHC's Family and Friends Weekend, the Mount Holyoke College Athletics Department is set to induct its second class into the MHC Athletics Hall of Fame. Among this year's Class of 2015 inductees is Barbara Cassani ’82, Michele Drolet ’76, Ruth Elvedt ’55, Krista Lindquist ’03, Robert and Maril O’Malley, Olga M. Sacasa-Cruz ’84 and Cheryl Daley Williams ’94.

The Class of 2015 will be honored at a halftime celebration during the soccer game against Bard on Saturday, before being formally inducted that evening in a gala at Willits-Hallowell Conference Center.

FIELD HOCKEY

The field hockey team powered its way to a 1-0 victory over #9 Babson on Saturday. Sophomore midfielder Sophie Perekslis (Millerton, N.Y.) scored the goal and junior goalie Liz DiCesare (Westford, Mass.) made five stops, recording her NEWMAC-leading fifth shutout of the season. Mount Holyoke (8-5; 3-2 NEWMAC) opens a busy week of action beginning Tuesday as it hosts WPI at 7pm. The Lyons welcome Western New England on Thursday (7pm) and close out the week at with a critical conference game at MIT on Saturday (12pm).

SOCCER

The Lyons went 0-2 last week with losses to Coast Guard (1-0 OT) and Wheaton (2-1). First year forward Sara Sanaú Ruiz (Zaragoza, Spain) tallied MHC's lone goal. Mount Holyoke (8-5-1; 3-3-1 NEWMAC) is back on the pitch on Tuesday when it travels to Springfield for a 7pm contest. The Lyons close out the week with a 1pm hone game against Bard.

TENNIS

Mount Holyoke saw a number of players in action at the NEWITT Tournament on Friday and Saturday. The Lyons are now gearing up for Wednesday's home NEWMAC Quarterfinal match, which will see the fourth-seeded Lyons host fifth-seeded Wheaton College. The match, which will determine who will advance to Saturday's semifinal against top-seeded MIT, begins at 3pm on the MHC Tennis Courts.

 

VOLLEYBALL

The Lyons shouldered losses to Springfield, Framingham State and Plymouth State last week. Mount Holyoke (6-12; 0-8 NEWMAC) is back in action on Wednesday when it travels to Norwich University for a 7pm contest. The Lyons conclude the week on the road on Saturday in a tri-match at Western Connecticut State. MHC will face Southern Maine at 2pm and then face the host Colonials at 4pm.

CROSS COUNTRY

MHC had an outstanding effort at the 2015 Seven Sisters Championship - hosted by Bryn Mawr - as the Lyons were runners-up in the field of seven teams. Leading the effort was sophomore Sunny Shan (Cupertino, Calif.), who earned All-Seven Sisters honors after finishing ninth overall with a time of 23:35.4. The Lyons are now idle until November 1 when they head to Boston to compete in the NEWMAC Championships at 11am.

RIDING

The Lyons finished as the reserve champions at last weekend's Williams College Show. First year Grace Tice (West Simsbury, Conn.) earned reserve high point rider, while sophomore Anna Rzchowski (Madison, Wisc.) was named novice high point rider. Mount Holyoke returns to action this weekend, hosting the first home show of the season on Saturday at the MHC Equestrian Center.


GOLF

Mount Holyoke concluded its fall season last weekend, finishing fifth of nine teams at Wellesley's Ann S. Batchelder Invitational. The Lyons were paced once again by junior captain June Conti (Amenia, N.Y.), who finished 17th overall. MHC will return to the links in the spring.


ROWING

The Lyons finished 26th overall at the 2015 Head of the Charles Regatta on Sunday. MHC posted a time of 19:16.757, beating out fellow NEWMAC-rivals Smith and Clark. Mount Holyoke will conclude its fall schedule on November 1 when it hosts the 2015 Seven Sisters Championship at the MHC Boat House on the Connecticut River.
