Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Sep. 15th

 

FIELD HOCKEY

The #17 field hockey team moved to 4-1 on the season, shouldering a tough 2-0 loss at #12 Amherst, before defeating Castleton State by a 7-0 margin. Sophomore forward Charlotte Wagner (West Chester, Pa.) had two goals and an assist to lead the Lyons in victory. MHC (4-1; 0-0 NEWMAC) is back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Williams at 7pm in their only contest of the week. SOCCER

The Lyons posted a 1-1 week, falling to #20 Amherst (6-0), before downing Southern Vermont (4-2). First year Suz Rose (South Hamilton, Mass.) had two goals, while senior Cassidy Robinson (Lebanon, N.H.) posted two goals and two assists. MHC (2-3; 0-0 NEWMAC) returns to the pitch on Tuesday, hosting Western New England University at 6pm. The Lyons close out the week on Saturday, opening NEWMAC play at home against Babson at 1pm. TENNIS

Mount Holyoke went 1-1 last week, posting a 9-0 win over Emerson, before falling to Wellesley by an 8-1 margin. First year Ishita Tibrewal (Kolkata, India) continued to impress, winning her match in the loss to the Blue to improve to 5-0 in singles action this season. The Lyons (3-3; 1-2 NEWMAC) returns to the courts on Saturday in a 1pm conference match at MIT.

 

VOLLEYBALL

The Lyons defeated MCLA by a 3-0 margin before heading to Poughkeepsie to compete in the 2014 Seven Sisters Championships at Vassar. The Lyons shouldered four losses at the tournament, but were paced by junior Emma Sweeting (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.) who was named to the All-Tournament Team after posting 42 kills and 34 digs on the weekend. The Lyons (2-7) return to action on Tuesday, opening NEWMAC play at Babson (7pm). MHC closes out the week on Saturday at Emerson for a 12pm match.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Lyons were idle this week and return to action on September 27th when they compete at the Purple Valley Classic at Williams (1pm).

 

GOLF

Mount Holyoke opened its 2014-15 season last weekend, finishing second of 12 teams at the NYU Inviational, hosted in Suffern, N.Y. The Lyons were led by senior captain Madi Mendiola (San Diego, Calif.), who placed sixth overall with a combined score of 155 (78-77). Mount Holyoke returns to the greens on Saturday when it hosts the MHC Invitational at the Orchards Golf Club. Action will run through Sunday.

 

RIDING

Under the direction of head coach C.J. Law, the Mount Holyoke riding team opens its 2014-15 campaign on Saturday when it travels to Baltimore, Md., to compete in the Preseason Tournament of Champions. The Lyons look to flourish once again this season, following a seventh-place finish at the IHSA National Championships last spring.
