Mount Holyoke was in action at the Regional Championships on Saturday as 13 riders battled for the right to advance to the Zone 1 Championships. Five riders went on to qualify, while junior captain Bridget Finnerty (Baltimore, Md.) earned high point fences championship honors and also took home reserve high point flat honors.
Mount Holyoke returns to action next Saturday when it hosts the Zone 1 Championship at the Equestrian Center. The five individual qualifiers will be competing for a spot at Nationals, while as a team, the Lyons will go head-to-head with URI, Tufts, UConn, and UVM in the team competition. The top two teams will move on to Nationals.
Mount Holyoke had a solid effort on Saturday, finishing seventh of 17 teams at the Jim Sheehan Invitational at Fitchburg State. Among the outstanding finishes included first year Mara White, who was sixth in the 400-meter dash and also 11th in the 200-meter race. MHC returns to action next weekend when it travels to Northampton to compete at the Smith College Invitational. Action at the meet begins at 11am.
The Lyons shouldered a pair of tough losses last week against Emerson and Babson. Sophomore midfielder/defender Julia Lankin (West Hartford, Conn.) led the Lyons with seven draw control wins on the week. Mount Holyoke (1-6; 0-2 NEWMAC) is back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Wheaton in a Battle of the Lyons at 6pm on the Turf Field. Mount Holyoke went 2-1 last week, defeating University of Puerto Rico (8-1) and Colby-Sawyer (8-1) before shouldering a tough loss at Connecticut College (8-1) to conclude the week. Highlighting the week was a 3-0 effort in first doubles by senior captain Margaux Holloschutz (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) and first year Ayame Yazawa (Tokyo, Japan). MHC (10-7) returns to action next weekend when it competes at the 2016 Seven Sisters Championship, hosted by Vassar.
Mount Holyoke opens action on Saturday with an 11am match against Wellesley, followed by a 2pm match against Bryn Mawr. Sunday's competition will see the Lyons face the host Brewers at 10:30am, followed by a 1:30pm match with Smith.
The Lyons had another solid weekend on the water, competing last weekend on the Malden River against Tufts, Hamilton and Coast Guard. MHC's varsity eight finished second against both the Continentals and the Bears, while the second varsity eight were victors over the Bears and second to the host Jumbos. Mount Holyoke returns to the water on April 10 when it travels to Worcester, Mass., and Lake Quinsigamond for a day of racing against Clark, the University of Vermont and Simmons.
Mount Holyoke returns to the links this weekend, opening its spring season at the Vassar Invitational on Saturday through Sunday. The fall season saw the Lyons finish eighth or better in all five of their matches, including two top-five finishes. Saturday's action kicks-off at 11:30am, while Sunday's play gets underway at 9am.
