Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Apr. 21st

 

RIDING

The Lyons are idle until May 1-4 when the squad heads to the IHSA National Championships, hosted at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg, Pa.

TRACK & FIELD

The Lyons had an outstanding effort last weekend, finishing sixth overall at the Aloha Relays, hosted by Bowdoin College. MHC was paced by several outstanding efforts, including senior Kristina Weld (Warwick, Mass.), who finished third in the hammer throw with a distance of 44.75 meters - a mark which eclipsed the old MHC record (44.69) set by Nikki Shaw in 1996. The Lyons are back in action on Saturday when they host the 2014 NEWMAC Championships. Action gets underway at 11am.

LACROSSE

MHC went 1-1 last week, defeating Smith (18-9) before falling at MIT (22-19).  Sophomore attack Julia Bell (Longmeadow, Mass.) recorded 15 goals on the week, including nine in the win over the Pioneers. Mount Holyoke (8-7; 3-4 NEWMAC) secured the fifth-seed in the NEWMAC Tournament and will travel back to MIT, the fourth-seed, on Wednesday for a Quarterfinal match at 7pm. TENNIS

MHC (11-9) posted a 5-4 victory over Roger Williams to close out its 2013-14 season on Saturday. The Lyons, which had strong efforts from the lower end of their singles lineup, honored seniors AnnElizabeth Konkel (Camp Hill, Pa.), Eman Malik (Karachi, Pakistan) and Maya Sayarath (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) in a pre-match ceremony for their years of dedication and hard-work with the program.

CREW

The Lyons saw their varsity eight boat finish fifth overall at the NEWMAC Championships last weekend. MHC was paced at the regatta by the novice eight, which claimed victory in their race with a time of 7:31.0. Junior captain Hannah Arbach (Springfield, Va.) and first year Meghan Ryan (West Point, N.Y.) were both named to the NEWMAC All-Conference Second Team for their efforts. MHC returns to action on Saturday, May 3rd when they compete in the New England Championships in Worcester.

GOLF

The Lyons finished sixth of 15 teams at last weekend's Jack Leaman Invitational. MHC was paced by junior captain Madi Mendiola (San Diego, Calif.), who finished 10th overall at the event. Mount Holyoke returns to action next weekend it competes at the Liberty League Championships. The event, which will be hosted by Wellesley College, will be held at the Crumpin-Fox Golf Club in Bernardston, Mass. Action both days begins at 9am.
