Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Nov. 17th

FIELD HOCKEY

The #13 Lyons posted a 2-0 victory over Husson University in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament last Wednesday, but could not get past #3 Bowdoin in the Sweet 16 on Saturday. Despite a strong and solid effort, MHC fell to the defending national champions by a 4-0 margin to conclude their outstanding 2014 campaign with a 17-4 overall mark.

Additionally, the Lyons saw four named All-Conference last week. Named to the First Team was three-time honoree senior midfielder Kirsten Kilburn, junior midfielder Sarah LaQuerre and sophomore goalie Liz DiCesare. Sophomore defender Ruvimbo Mushavi was named to the Second Team.

 

SOCCER

The Lyons saw senior forward Cassidy Robinson (Lebanon, N.H.) named to the NEWMAC All-Conference Second Team last week.

 

RIDING

The Lyons were idle last week, but return to action on Saturday when they host their second Home Show of the year.

 

CROSS COUNTRY

The cross country team wrapped-up its season on Saturday, finishing 19th of 57 teams at the 2014 NCAA New England Regional Championship, hosted by Williams College. The Lyons saw sophomore Becca Rogers (Tucson, Ariz.) finish 68th overall out of 357 total runners.

 

SWIMMING & DIVING

The Lyons posted a 156-125 win at Westfield State last week. MHC was paced by sophomore Anne Kuenning (Bow, N.H.), who notched two individual wins in the backstroke, while also helping two relays to victory. SQUASH

The Lyons competed at the Wesleyan Round Robin last weekend, going 2-2 at the two-day event. Day one saw MHC fall to William Smith (8-1) before defeating Tufts (6-3). On day two, the Lyons were victorious over Smith (9-0), but fell to the host Cardinals (9-0). The squad is now idle until December 3 when it hosts Smith at 6:30pm.

 

BASKETBALL

The Lyons went 1-1 to open their 2014-15 campaign, dropping the opener to Castleton State (70-45) before defeating Elms (65-63) to conclude play at the Rutland Herald Tip-Off Classic. Senior forward Nicole DeMarchena (Miami, Fla.) was named to the All-Tournament Team after impressive numbers, which included 19 rebounds and nine blocks over the two contests.

MHC (1-1) returns to the court on Wednesday in a 7pm game against Worcester State. That contest will be played at Clark University. The Lyons wrap-up the week at the Amherst Tip-Off Tournament, playing the host Jeffs on Saturday (6pm). The championship/consolation games will be played on Sunday.
