Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Nov. 12th

CROSS COUNTRY

Mount Holyoke wrapped-up its 2012 schedule at the NCAA New England Regional Championships at Westfield State on Saturday. The Lyons finished 19th of 51 competing teams, led by first year Elizabeth DeLeon (Boise, Idaho), who placed 89th of 367 runners.

RIDING

The equestrian team was idle last week, but returns to action on Saturday when it hosts the MHC Horse Show at the Equestrian Center.

SWIMMING & DIVING

The Lyons went 1-1 last week, defeating Westfield State on the road (165-121) before falling in a very close match to Division II Assumption (146-138). First year Cathleen Pruden (Raleigh, N.C.) continued to steal the show, posting five victories in six events over the two meets. Additionally, she broke three school records, including in the 400-individual medley where she posted a time of 4:35.56, shattering the old record (4:52.16) and achieving an NCAA B Cut.

MHC returns to action this week with two meets beginning on Friday at Trinity (Conn.) at 6:30pm. The Lyons then host Western Connecticut State on Saturday at 1pm at the MHC Natatorium.

BASKETBALL

Under the direction of ninth-year head coach Michelle Scecina, the MHC basketball team opens its 2012-13 campaign this weekend at the Keene State Tip-Off. The Lyons will face-off against Mount Ida on Friday at 5pm and will battle either York (N.Y.) or the host Owls on Saturday at a time to be determined.

Last season, Mount Holyoke went 7-17 overall and 5-13 in the NEWMAC, including victories over Coast Guard, MIT, Springfield and Wheaton. The Lyons concluded the season with wins in four of their last five contests.
