Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Sep. 1st

 

FIELD HOCKEY

The field hockey team opened their season with a 3-1 victory over Simmons on the Turf field. Three different Lyons scored, including first year Sophie Perekslis (Sheffield, Mass.), who scored the go-ahead goal that turned into the eventual game-winner. Mount Holyoke (1-0) returns to action on Tuesday evening, hosting Nichols at 7pm. The Lyons then travel to Troy, N.Y., on Saturday to face-off against Rensselaer at 2pm.

SOCCER

The Lyons opened their 2014 season with a tough 1-0 loss to Nichols last Saturday. MHC (0-1) is back in action on Thursday when it hosts Lyndon State at 6pm. TENNIS

Mount Holyoke posted a 9-0 victory over UMass-Boston in its season-opener and fell by a 5-4 margin to Simmons to wrap-up its first weekend. The Lyons were paced by first year Ishita Tibrewal (Kolkata, India), who posted a 2-0 record in fourth flight singles and went 2-0 in first flight doubles. MHC (1-1) is back on the court on Thursday when it hosts the University of Saint Joseph at 5pm. The Lyons then open NEWMAC play on Saturday in a 1pm contest at Wheaton.

VOLLEYBALL

The Lyons took to the floor for the first time in 2014 last weekend, falling in tri-match action against Worcester State (3-0) and Norwich (3-1). Junior Emma Sweeting (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y.) led MHC with 28 kills on the weekend. Mount Holyoke (0-2) continues its five-game homestand on Saturday with its second tri-match in as many weeks. The Lyons will face the University of Saint Joseph in match one (11am), before taking on Bridgewater State (3pm) in the final match of the day. The BlueJays and Bears will meet in the middle match (1pm).

 

CROSS COUNTRY

Under the direction of fourth-year head coach Jennifer Adams, the cross country team will open its season on Saturday at the Smith College Invitational. Meet time is set for 11am.
