The Lyons were back in action last weekend, competing at the UMass Horse Show. MHC finished second overall, earning Reserve High Point Champion honors, while also maintaining a sizeable lead in the regional standings. Mount Holyoke returns to action on Saturday, when it hosts the MHC Horse Show at the Equestrian Center.
Mount Holyoke (6-4; dual meet) finished sixth overall at the 2014 NEWMAC Championships. Eleven school records fell for the Lyons, paced by sophomore Cathleen Pruden (Raleigh, N.C.), who won the 400-IM for the second-straight season and also achieved an NCAA B Cut as well as NEWMAC and school records in the race.
The Lyons concluded the regular season with this weekend's meet. MHC will now await selections to the NCAA Championships, of which Pruden has a strong chance of being chosen. Currently, she sits sixth among all Division III swimmers in the 400-IM.
The #23 squash team (10-11) was in action at the 2014 CSA National Championships, hosted by Princeton University. MHC, which was competing in the Walker Cup (C draw) lost to #18 Franklin & Marshall (6-3), but rebounded with a 7-2 win over #22 Wellesley (7-2) in the consolation round. The Lyons faced #21 Wesleyan in the consolation finals, falling 6-3. Senior captain Shaheen Madraswala (Mumbai, India) and junior Xianger Fei (Hangzhou, China) were both recognized with CSA Scholar Athlete honors at this year's championships.
Select members of the team will return to action this weekend at the 2014 CSA Individual Nationals, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania. Action begins on Friday and runs through Sunday.
The Lyons concluded their 2013-14 season last week, shouldering losses to Springfield (46-41) and Wellesley (62-44). MHC was paced by junior captain Kate Karraker (Morgantown, W.V.), who posted a 16.5 points per game average, while also adding seven assists and a steal. MHC concluded the season with a 6-19 record, going 3-17 in NEWMAC play.
Mount Holyoke was in action at the New England Division III Championships, hosted by Springfield last weekend. The Lyons saw a number of solid performances, including a season's best distance in the weight throw from senior captain Kristina Weld (Warwick, Mass.). Select members of the squad will return to action on March 7 at the ECAC Championships in Boston.
Under the direction of seventh-year head coach Miriam Esber, the Lyons kick off their 2014 campaign on Saturday at Skidmore in a 12pm game. MHC's lineup features five of the top seven scorers from a season ago, including the NEWMAC Rookie of the Year in Julia Bell (Longmeadow, Mass.).
MHC looks to continue to build off last season's banner year, which saw the Lyons go 13-4 overall and 4-2 in NEWMAC play. The squad advanced to the conference semifinals and went on to win its first-ever ECAC New England Championship. The Lyons first home game will be March 11 against Western New England University at 5pm.
The Lyons open their spring portion of their schedule on Saturday with a 10:00am home match against Bates College. Led by head coach Aldo Santiago, MHC posted a 6-6 record during the fall campaign, including an appearance in the NEWMAC Quarterfinals.
