Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Aug. 31st

 

FIELD HOCKEY

The field hockey team kicks off its 2015 season on Tuesday evening in a 7pm contest at Nichols College. The Lyons then open their home slate on Saturday at 1pm against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at the Turf Field.  Under the direction of 18th-year head coach Andy Whitcomb, the Lyons look to return to the NCAA Tournament after posting a 17-4 record, going 7-1 overall in the NEWMAC. The squad advanced to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season, backstopped by NFHCA All-America Third Team goalie Liz DiCesare.

SOCCER

The Lyons open their 2015 season on Tuesday in a 1pm game at Southern Vermont College. MHC will close out the week with a 2pm contest at Nichols College.  in a home game against Nichols. The Lyons, who are led by ninth-year head coach Kanae Haneishi, are coming off a season in which they went 6-12-0 including wins over Lyndon State, Southern Vermont, Western New England, Bay Path, Clark and Wellesley.

TENNIS

Mount Holyoke opens up its 2015 slate on Thursday when it welcomes UMass-Boston (10am)  to the MHC Tennis Courts.  Under the direction of 23rd-year head coach Aldo Santiago, the Lyons look to return to the NEWMAC Tournament for the 11th straight season after putting forth an outstanding effort last year. MHC went 14-9 in 2014, including an appearance in the conference semifinals. The Lyons close out the week on Saturday, welcoming NEWMAC-rival Wheaton for a 1pm match.

 

VOLLEYBALL

The Lyons take to the floor for the first time in 2015 on Wednesday, traveling to Elms College for a 6pm match. MHC will then head to West Hartford for a tri-match against the University of St. Joseph (10am) and Medgar Evers (12pm) on Saturday at USJ. Led by eighth-year head coach Sonnie Terrell, the Lyons return six players from last season's squad, including senior captain Emma Sweeting, while welcoming six newcomers to the team.

CROSS COUNTRY

Under the direction of fifth-year head coach Jennifer Adams, the cross country team will open its season on September 12 at the Smith College Invitational. Meet time is set for 11am. The squad returns eight runners from last year’s team, which finished 19th overall at the NCAA Regional Championships.
