Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Feb. 19th

RIDING

MHC was idle last week, but returns to regular season shows action on Saturday at Stoneleigh-Burnham School hosted by Smith College.


SWIMMING & DIVING

Mount Holyoke was idle last week, but is back in action on Thursday when it opens action at the NEWMAC Championships, hosted by MIT in Cambridge, Mass. Action runs through Sunday with preliminaries at 10am, followed by 6pm finals. SQUASH

Mount Holyoke took to the courts this weekend at the CSA Team Championships, hosted at Harvard University. The Lyons opened Epps Cup (D Division) with a 6-3 victory over Vassar to advance to the semifinals. Despite several outstanding efforts, MHC fell to Bowdoin, 7-2 on Saturday. Mount Holyoke played in the 3/4 playoff match on Sunday, shouldering a tough 5-4 loss to Connecticut College to conclude team action for the season. The squad, which posted an 8-14 record on the season, will now see select players in action March 2-4 at the CSA Individual Nationals, hosted at George Washington University.


BASKETBALL

The Lyons suffered a pair of losses to Smith and Wellesley to wrap-up its 2017-18 campaign. Mount Holyoke finishes its season with an 0-24 mark, going 0-16 in NEWMAC play.


TRACK & FIELD

Mount Holyoke was in action at the New England Division III Championships, hosted by Springfield last weekend. The Lyons were paced by sophomore Charleen Theroux (Coventry, R.I.), who bested her own school record in the Pentathlon with a score of 3,175 points. Additionally, she posted three season-high marks at the event as she finished sixth overall. With the exception of Theroux, who will compete again during the indoor season, the Lyons squad is now idle until March 24th when they open the outdoor season at the Wesleyan Invitational. More information regarding Theroux's next event will follow soon as she looks to qualify for the NCAA Championships in the Pentathlon.

 

LACROSSE

Under the direction of 11th-year head coach Miriam Esber, lacrosse takes to the field for the first time in 2018 on Saturday. The Lyons host Gordon College in their season-opener, which will begin at 12pm on the Turf Field. MHC is coming off a season in which is bested several non-conference and NEWMAC opponents, including Western New England and Coast Guard. MHC returns 14 players from last year's squad, including its top scorer in senior Kaitlin Braz (Tolland, Conn.), who posted 32 goals and 12 assists for 44 points in 2017.
