BOSTON, Mass. - The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) announced its weekly award winners and Mount Holyoke College student-athlete Colby Newsham was recognized. She was named the co-Offensive Athlete of the Week in field hockey after a record-tying and career-highlighting performance last week against Westfield State.
Newsham, a junior captain and midfielder who hails from Harvard, Mass., was outstanding last week helping the Lyons secure the fourth-seed in the upcoming NEWMAC tournament. She opened the week with a career-high five goals for 10 points, which also tied the program record for goals in a game and points in a game, in a 10-4 win over Westfield State. She then assisted on the game-winning goal as MHC defeated WPI on the road to lock up the fourth-seed in the tournament, as well as the Lyons 19th consecutive appearance in the playoffs.
The squad's primary injector on penalty corners, Newsham has nine goals and six assists for 24 points as a starter in all 17 games this season. She ranks third on the squad in points and is also second in goals. Additionally, Newsham is third on the team in assists. Currently amongst the conference's best, she is ninth overall in both points and assists, while currently ranking 11th in goals. Newsham also ranks second in the conference play in assists, having posted five helpers over eight NEWMAC games.
A former standout at the Bromfield School, Newsham has started all 58 games she has played for the Lyons in her career. She has notched 20 goals and 12 assists for 52 points during that span.
Mount Holyoke returns to action on Tuesday at 7pm when it hosts the NEWMAC Quarterfinals on the Turf Field. The fourth-seeded Lyons will take on the fifth-seeded Springfield for the right to move on to the NEWMAC Semifinals on Saturday at 11am against top-seeded Babson College. The Lyons have appeared in each of the last four NEWMAC semifinals, earning the conference crown in 2015.
