Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Apr. 30th

RIDING

Mount Holyoke is idle until May 3rd when it opens competition at the IHSA Nationals, hosted this year at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg, Pa. Action will run through Sunday, May 6th.

ROWING

The Lyons were back on Lake Quinsigamond last weekend to compete at the NEWMAC Championships. Both of the Mount Holyoke boats that competed placed sixth in each of their races, while Wellesley College won all four events to earn the overall victory. The Lyons will have 10 days off, before heading back to Lake Quinsigamond for the NIRC on May 11th.


TRACK & FIELD

Mount Holyoke was at Springfield College for the second week in a row, this time competing for the NEWMAC Championship on Saturday. Highlighting the day was sophomore Charleen Theroux (Coventry, R.I.) who took down her personal record to place fifth in the 400-meter day with a time of 58.63. The Lyons placed ninth overall, while MIT took the Championship with an overall score of 213. Theroux will join first years Tamara Mukuku (Nairobi, Kenya), Isabelle Wohlin (Wellesley, Mass.), and Ireland Clare Kennedy (Oakland, Pa.) in the 4X400m relay on Friday. Sophomore Emma Raney (Palo Alto, Calif.) will also comepete in the 3,000m steeplechase.

LACROSSE

The Lyons concluded its season after two tough road losses last week. In the first game against Smith College, first year Meryl Phair (Stockbridge, Mass.) recorded a career-high three goals and added an assist, while junior Deyscha Smith (Boston, Mass.) had two goals and one assist in the loss to Babson College.

TENNIS

MHC went 1-1 last week, defeating Smith College 9-0, but falling to Wheaton College 5-4 in the NEWMAC Quarterfinals. In the victory, the Lyons dominated throughout, including 6-0, 6-0 wins from first year Anya Gerasimova (Salem, Ore.) and junior Madison Rosen (Portland , Ore./Grant). Against Wheaton, MHC came from behind to tie the match at 4-4 heading into the final point. Wheaton won the final match by a 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 margin to advance to the NEWMAC Semifinals on Tuesday.

GOLF

Mount Holyoke concluded the season last weekend at the Liberty League Championships. The Lyons placed sixth overall with a combined score of 339 on day one. Action was canceled on Sunday due to inclement weather. Leading the Lyons was sophomore Stephanie Spitzer (Hinsdale, Ill.) with a score of 75. New York University won this year's title with a combined score of 297.
