Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for May 7th

RIDING

Mount Holyoke had an exceptional performance at the 2018 IHSA National Championships held at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg, Pa. The week a number of fantastic performances, including senior captain Mollie Kowalchik (Loveland, Ohio), who was the Reserve National Champion for the USEF/Cacchione Cup. The Lyons also saw first year Sara Hearn (Tallahassee, Fla.) make her IHSA Nationals debut as she went on to become the National Champion in Collegiate Cup Intermediate Equitation Over Fences. Overall, the team finished seventh among a field of 16 teams.

ROWING

The Lyons returned to action at the New England Rowing Championships on Lake Quinsigamond on Saturday. The first Varsity Eight (V8) boat opened up the day with a sixth place finish in the first heat, placing them in the third V8 Final. The Lyons clocked in at 7:21.553 for fourth place. The second varsity (2V) boat placed fifth in its first race to send them to the third 2V8 Final, where they finished fourth with a time of 7:55.646. The Lyons will head back to Lake Quinsigamond to wrap up the season at the NIRC next Friday on May 11.


TRACK & FIELD

MHC had five student-athletes qualify for the 2018 New England DIII Championships. Sophomore Emma Raney (Palo Alto, Calif.) kicked off the day with an 11th place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. She crosssed the line with a career-best time of 12:05.40. Classmate Charleen Theroux (Coventry, R.I.) placed sixth in the 400m dash clocking in at a personal best, 58.51, before joining first years Tamara Mukulu (Nairobi, Kenya), Isabelle Wohlin (Wellesley, Mass.) and Ireland Clare Kennedy (Oakland, Calif.) in the 4X400m dash. The foursome also beat their previous best time, placing 12th overall after crossing the line in 4:11.61. The Lyons will wait to see if Theroux qualified in the 400m dash for the Open New England Championships next Friday in Hanover, New Hampshire.
