Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Oct. 16th

FIELD HOCKEY

The Lyons posted a 2-0 mark last week, besting Simmons (2-0) and Wheaton (5-2). Leading the way for MHC was sophomore goalie Morgan Turner (Chester, N.J.), who earned the victory in each match and also recorded three saves on the week. Mount Holyoke (9-4; 4-2 NEWMAC) has now won each of its last four contests, three of which have come against NEWMAC opponents. The Lyons are back in action on Tuesday at 7pm when they host Western New England University. The squad concludes the week on Saturday with a key-conference match-up at Smith at 12pm. SOCCER

Mount Holyoke went 0-1-1 last week, recording a 0-0 double-overtime tie against Clark, before falling to WPI by a 2-0 margin. Junior goal keeper Amanda Manaster (Beverly Hills, Calif.) paced the defense once again for the Lyons, recording a combined 25 saves, including 17 in the draw against the Cougars. MHC (2-10-2; 0-6-1 NEWMAC) is back in action this week beginning Wednesday in a 7:15pm match at Rensselaer. The Lyons close out the week at Wheaton on Saturday in a 1pm conference showdown. VOLLEYBALL

Mount Holyoke went 1-3 during a busy slate last week. The Lyons shouldered losses to Springfield (3-0), Western New England (3-1) and New Paltz (3-1), but bested Bard (3-0) for their eighth win of the season. Pacing the action in the victory was junior captain Sarah Caggiano (Leonardtown, Md.), who posted seven kills, seven digs and three block assists against the Raptors. MHC (8-9; 1-6 NEWMAC) is back in action this week beginning Tuesday with a 7pm home conference match against Clark. The Lyons close out the week with home tri-match action as Mount Holyoke will play Baruch at 10am, followed by Westfield State at 2pm. The middle match of the day at 12pm will feature Baruch and Westfield State. CROSS COUNTRY

Mount Holyoke finished seventh overall last weekend at the 2017 Seven Sisters Championship, hosted by Smith College. Junior Corrin Moss (Columbus, Ohio) paced the way for the Lyons, placing 21st overall in the 6k event. MHC is idle this weekend, but returns to action on October 29th when it competes at the 2017 NEWMAC Championship, hosted at Franklin Park in Boston.

 

GOLF

The Lyons concluded their 2017 fall season last weekend, placing fifth of 10 teams at the NYU Invitational. Sophomore Susan Lee (Irvine, Calif.), who rallied for a score of 83 after shooting an 84 on Saturday, good for a 20th place tie overall. Mount Holyoke is now idle until the spring season, returning to action on April 14th at the Vassar Invitational.


RIDING

Mount Holyoke kicked off its 2017-18 regular season slate last weekend with an outstanding team victory at the Williams College Show. The Lyons were led by senior Sabrina Fox (Westfield, Mass.), who earned the blue ribbons in novice flat and novice fences, garnering overall high point rider and novice high point rider honors on the day. Mount Holyoke returns to action on Saturday when it competes at the UMass Show.

 

TENNIS

The Lyons had a solid effort at the NEWITT Tournament last weekend. MHC saw the duo of first year Anya Gerasimova (Salem, Ore.) and sophomore Catherine Peabody (San Francisco, Calif.) advance to the finals of the B draw consolation, shouldering a tough loss to Colby. Mount Holyoke (1-1) concluded its fall season and will return to action in February when it heads to Bryn Mawr to compete in the 2018 Seven Sisters Championship.


ROWING

Mount Holyoke took to the water for the first time last weekend, competing at the Quinsigamond Snake Regatta in Worcester, Massachusetts. The Lyons entered three varsity 4+ boats into the race, which ended up finishing sixth, 11th and 18th overall. The Lyons 'A' boat, which placed sixth overall was comprised of first year coxswain Virginia Butt (Boscawen, N.H.), sophomore stroke Halee Mahoney (Ann Arbor, Mich.), senior (3) Ariya Lawson (Washington, D.C.), senior (2) Sophie Rabinow (Orsay, France) and sophomore bow Hannah LeBlanc (Portland, Ore.). Mount Holyoke is back in the water on Sunday when it competes at the 2017 Head of the Charles Regatta. Race time is at 2:25 and the Lyons varsity eight boat with be Bow 25.
