Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Sept. 18th

FIELD HOCKEY

The Lyons went 2-1 last week, falling at #13 Williams (3-0) before besting Clark (6-1) and Thomas (5-0) on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Junior midfielder Mirjam Keochakian (Hamburg, Germany) paced MHC's offense on the week, scoring three goals - all against Clark- while adding an assist in the win over the Terriers. Mount Holyoke (4-2; 1-0 NEWMAC) returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Wesleyan on the Turf Field at 7pm. The Lyons close out the week on Saturday in a 3pm contest at MIT. SOCCER

Mount Holyoke shouldered losses to Western New England (1-0) and Emerson (4-2) last week. Senior forward Sara Sanaú Ruiz (Zaragoza, Spain) recorded her team-leading fifth goal of the season, while sophomore Hannah Finn-Erb (Northampton, Mass.) also scored for the Lyons. MHC (2-4-0; 0-1-0 NEWMAC) is back in action this week beginning Wednesday when it welcomes Wesleyan to the field at 6pm. The Lyons wrap-up the week on Saturday in a 1pm match at Wellesley. VOLLEYBALL

Mount Holyoke suffered NEWMAC losses to Wheaton (3-0) and Wellesley (3-1) last week. Junior Cameron Graham (Sarasota, Fla.) paced the Lyons effort on Saturday with a match-best 11 digs against the Blue. MHC (4-3; 0-2 NEWMAC) is back in action with a pair of conference home games at the Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium, beginning Tuesday against Coast Guard (7pm). The team rounds out the week on Saturday against Emerson (1pm). CROSS COUNTRY

Mount Holyoke was back on the course this weekend, posting 28th overall at the UMass-Dartmouth Invitational. The Lyons were paced by junior Corrin Moss (Columbus, Ohio) was the first to cross the line for the Lyons, finishing 108th overall in the strong 5k field. It also marked personal best times for four runners, including Moss. MHC returns to action on Saturday when it heads to Franklin Park to participate in the Codfish Bowl. Race time is set for 12:30pm.

 

GOLF

The Lyons opened their 2017-18 season last weekend, finishing sixth overall at the Ann S. Batchelder Invitational, hosted by Wellesley College. MHC was paced by sophomore Stephanie Spitzer (Hinsdale, Ill.), who finished in a tie for 24th overall.  The squad returns to action this weekend when they host the 2017 MHC Invitational at The Orchards Golf Club. Action begins on Saturday and runs through Sunday with expected tee-off times beginning at 8:30am.


RIDING

MHC opened its 2017-18 season last weekend, taking part in the first leg of the Tournament of Champions series - the Preseason TOC. The Lyons saw both of its teams finish in the top eight, including fourth overall by Team Yellow Ribbon. Senior Mollie Kowalchik (Loveland, Ohio) was one of two MHC riders to garner a blue ribbon on the day as she took top honors in Open Flat. Mount Holyoke is now idle until October 14 when it travels to the Williams College Show.

 

TENNIS

The Lyons kicked-off their 2017-18 season on Sunday, posting a 9-0 victory at Simmons. MHC was led by outstanding efforts from all spots in the lineup, including sophomore Ching-Ching Huang (Lukang Township, Taiwan) and senior Ishita Tibrewal (Kolkata, India), who combined to win at first doubles before each winning their respective first and second flights in singles action. Mount Holyoke (1-0) is back on the court on Friday when it heads to Newport, R.I., to compete at the 2017 Tennis Hall of Fame Tournament. Action begins at 12pm.
