Mount Holyoke opens its 2017 campaign on Friday, traveling to UMass-Dartmouth for a 3pm start. The Lyons will then travel to Albertus Magnus on Sunday to take on the Falcons at 1pm. Under the direction of 11th-year head coach Kanae Haneishi, MHC will look to improve upon its 8-10 mark from a season ago, as nine of the top-10 scorers are set to return from last season, including junior Sara Sanaú Ruiz (Zaragoza, Spain) who recorded a team-best 22 points on five goals and team-high 12 assists. The field hockey team will open its season on Sunday at home when it welcomes Rensselaer at 3pm. Led by 20th-year head coach Andy Whitcomb, the Lyons had another strong season in 2016, advancing to the NEWMAC Semifinals for the fourth straight season. MHC returns 13 players from last year's squad, including eight of the top-10 scorers led by senior captain Sophie Perekslis (Millerton, N.Y.) and junior Mirjam Keochakian (Hamburg, Germany). The Lyons kick-off their 2017 season on Saturday, traveling to the University of Saint Joseph for a tri-match. MHC will square-off against the host BlueJays at 11am, before battling UMass-Dartmouth at 1pm. Under the direction of first-year head coach Iris Carpio, the Lyons will look to the leadership of seven returners, including junior Joy Maran (Santa Fe, N.M.), who led the squad with 172 kills last year.
