Lyons Tales: A Review & Preview of Mount Holyoke Athletics for Sept. 4th

SOCCER

Mount Holyoke posted a 1-1 mark to open 2017 last week, falling to UMass-Dartmouth (3-2 2OT) before besting Albertus Magnus (6-1). Senior Sara Sanaú Ruiz (Zaragoza, Spain) paced the Lyons offense, scoring three goals, including two in the win over the Falcons. Junior keeper Amanda Manaster (Beverly Hills, Calif.) posted 15 saves, including 11 in the double-overtime contest to open the season. MHC (1-1) returns to action on Thursday when it hosts Amherst at 7pm. The Lyons close out the weekend at home against Southern Vermont on Saturday at 1pm. FIELD HOCKEY

The Lyons opened their season on Sunday, besting Rensselaer by a 2-0 margin. MHC grabbed a goal in each half, while the defense surrendered just seven shots (3 on goal) to the Engineers. Sophomore goalie Morgan Turner (Chester, N.J.) earned her first collegiate victory with three stops. Mount Holyoke (1-0) returns to action on Thursday when it hosts #13 Amherst at 7:15pm. VOLLEYBALL

The Lyons came out swinging in their opening weekend, defeating the University of Saint Joseph (3-1) and UMass-Dartmouth (3-0) in tri-match road action. Sophomore Sasha Simine (Kitchener, Ont.) guided the MHC effort, recording a team-best 24 kills and eight total blocks to go along with two service aces. Mount Holyoke (2-0) is back on the court on Tuesday when it travels to MCLA for a 7pm match. The squad closes out the week at home, welcoming Elms (10am) and Simmons (2pm) for a tri-match. CROSS COUNTRY

Under the direction of first year head coach Chris Kibler, the cross country team opens its season on Saturday at the Smith College Invitational. Action gets underway at 10am. MHC returns several top finishers from a season ago, including senior Mia Barnes (Thornville, Ohio) and junior Corrin Moss (Columbus, Ohio) – both of whom crossed the line first for MHC in two races.
