Five Lyons Compete in CSA Individual Championships

AMHERST, Mass. (March 5, 2012) – Five members of the Mount Holyoke College squash team competed in the 2012 College Squash Association Individual Championships at Amherst College over the weekend. On the women's side of the event, there were two divisions - Ramsay Cup (A draw) and Holleran Cup (B draw). All five Mount Holyoke entrants competed for the Holleran Cup.

Highlighting the weekend for the Lyons was Shara Robertson, who advanced to the Quarterfinal Round with three straight victories. The senior got things going with a 3-0 triumph over Vassar College's Margaret Taylor in the round of 64. After topping Stanford University's Aditi Maliwal 3-1 in the round of 32, she overcame an early deficit to defeat Bowdoin College's Torey Lee 3-1 in the round of 16. Robertson's run came to an end with a 3-0 setback to Yale University's Issey Norman-Ross.

Mount Holyoke's remaining win came from sophomore Shaheen Madraswala, who rolled to a 3-0 triumph over George Washington University's Kelly Barnes in the round of 64. Madraswala fell 3-0 to eventual champion Shihui Mao of Yale in the round of 32. She was forced to default her consolation match.

Junior Kathryn Brummer, sophomore Randima Ranaweera and sophomore Katrina Intal each received first round byes before dropping their next two matches.

The Lyons rounded out their 2011-12 campaign with an overall record of 17-11. They closed out their season at the CSA National Championships, where they secured 14th place nationally. Their 17 wins tied a program record.
