Squash Falls to Brown in Quarterfinal Round of National Championships

HARVARD, Mass. (Feb. 24, 2012) – The sixth-seeded Mount Holyoke College squash team fell 8-1 to third-seeded Brown University this afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the 2012 College Squash Association National Championships. Sophomore Randima Ranaweera led the way for the Lyons with a convincing 3-0 triumph at the top of the lineup.

CSA Logo Junior Kathryn Brummer also turned in an outstanding performance for Mount Holyoke in her 3-1 loss to Erika Kohnen. Other strong efforts came from senior Shara Robertson and sophomore Katrina Intal.

Sarah Domenick, Sarah Crosky, Mina Shakarshy, Katherine Elliot, Sarah Beresford, Katherine Yates and Kyla Harrington each posted 3-0 victories for Brown (10-8).

With their win, the Bears advanced to tomorrow's Kurtz Cup (B Division) semifinals, where they will face off against second-seeded Bates College. The Bobcats advanced with a 7-2 victory over seventh-seeded Hamilton College 7-2. On the other side of the bracket, top-seeded Middlebury blanked eighth-seeded Franklin and Marshall College, and fourth-seeded Williams College topped fifth-seeded Columbia University 8-1.

Mount Holyoke (16-10) and Hamilton will meet up in the consolation bracket tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. The Lyons came out on top 6-3 when the two squads met during the regular season at the Pioneer Valley Invitational. They have defeated the Continentals eight times in a row.

Champions in each of the tournament's four subdivisions will be crowned on Sunday. All Kurtz Cup matches are being played at Harvard University's Murr Center.
