Squash Drops Heartbreaker at Amherst

AMHERST, Mass. (Feb. 8, 2012) – The Mount Holyoke College squash team saw its five-match winning  streak come to an end with a heartbreaking 5-4 setback to 16th-ranked Amherst College this evening at Davenport Courts. Sophomore Randima Ranaweera, senior Shara Robertson, sophomore Katrina Intal and junior Kathryn Brummer came up with wins for the Lyons, who entered the day ranked 13th in the latest CSA National Rankings.

After falling behind 4-3, Amherst stole the match with a pair of dramatic victories by juniors Ginny Taylor and Sarah Nyirjesy.

The first came from Taylor, who leveled the score with a 3-2 triumph over first year Dachelle Parker at the number nine position.

Nyirjesy then closed things out with a thrilling 3-2 triumph over first year Kristina Myren at the number five slot. The junior enjoyed a 2-0 advantage before dropping games three and four by scores of 11-8 and 11-5. With the match on the line, she took the final four points of the fifth game to secure an 11-7 triumph.

Mount Holyoke built an early lead with convincing 3-0 victories by Ranaweera and Robertson at the top of the lineup. Intal prevailed 3-1 in her number four tilt. Meanwhile, Brummer battled back from an early deficit to take her number six match by a score of 3-2.

Amherst's remaining wins came from senior Kate Savage, sophomore Lena Rice and junior Mary Katherine McNeill.

The Lord Jeffs (11-9) also edged the Lyons 5-4 last season.

Mount Holyoke (15-7) is slated to visit Williams College for a pair of matches on Saturday. After facing off against the Ephs at noon, the Lyons will take on St. Lawrence University at 2:00 p.m.
