BRUNSWICK, Maine (Jan. 29, 2012) – Led by junior Kathryn Brummer, the Mount Holyoke College squash team split a pair of matches today at the annual Maine Event. After falling 7-2 to Bates College, the Lyons rebounded with an 8-1 triumph over Bowdoin College. Brummer prevailed in both matches to cap off her perfect weekend. Mount Holyoke entered the day ranked 13th in the latest CSA National Rankings.

The Lyons were dominant in their 8-1 win over 19th-ranked Bowdoin. Sophomore Randima Ranaweera (1), senior Shara Robertson (2), sophomore Shaheen Madraswala (3), sophomore Katrina Intal (4), Brummer (6) and sophomore Elyse Taylor (9) set the tone with their shutout victories.

First year Kristina Myren overcame an early deficit to top Elizabeth Schetman 3-1 in the number five contest. Meanwhile, senior Paulina Rojek battled back from a 2-1 hole in her 3-2 triumph over Christiana Whitcomb at the eighth slot.

Mount Holyoke has now defeated the Polar Bears six times in a row.

Earlier in the day, the Lyons saw their three-match winning streak come to an end with a 7-2 loss to ninth-ranked Bates. After dropping the first two games of her number six match against Chloe Mitchell, Brummer rallied back to take the next two by scores of 11-7 and 11-9. The captain then sealed things with a thrilling 11-9 victory in the fifth. Over the course of the weekend, she dropped just two games.

Mount Holyoke's remaining point came from first year Dachelle Parker, who rolled to a 3-0 victory in her number nine match against Rokya Samake. The rookie has gone 9-0 over the first three months of her collegiate career.

With their three wins this weekend, the Lyons solidified their position among teams vying for the Kurtz Cup. Yesterday, they topped 21st-ranked Colby College and 14th-ranked George Washington University in convincing fashion.

Mount Holyoke (11-6) will return to action on Wednesday, when it hosts Connecticut College at 7:00 p.m.
