Senior Day Insert | Pink Zone Story
SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Feb. 19, 2011) – Led by forwards Damisi Adewumi, Nicole Wurdeman and Kathleen King, the fifth ranked Babson College women's basketball team topped Mount Holyoke College 95-51 this afternoon at the Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium. The trio combined for 71 points and 25 rebounds, as the Beavers improved to 25-0 and finished off a perfect regular season. For the second straight year, they posted an 18-0 mark in league play. Including tournament games, they have racked up 43 straight wins against NEWMAC foes.
The Lyons closed out their 2010-11 campaign with an overall record of 7-17 and a league mark of 5-13. Prior to the contest a senior day celebration took place to honor Emilie Methot, Jacquie MacDonald and Joanna McDonough for their contributions to the program over the past four years. McDonough collected four points, while Methot and MacDonald contributed two apiece.
Eleven players scored points for Mount Holyoke, which converted 37.0% (20-54) of its shots from the field and drained six three-pointers. Sophomore guard Angelica Pascual connected on four shots from beyond the arc en route to a 20-point performance. The Lyons also received a boost from sophomore guard Jasmine Brown, who scored seven points off the bench.
Babson sizzled from the floor, converting 59.0% (36-61) of its attempts. The Beavers finished with an overwhelming 60-18 advantage in the paint and outrebounded Mount Holyoke 41-22. Their 95 points were a season high. Adewumi was nearly unstoppable for the guests. In addition to pouring in 21 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the floor, she also pulled down a game best 14 rebounds to complete the double-double. The forward dished out a game high seven assists. Wurdeman racked up 28 points, while King added 22.
Pascual recorded 14 of her 20 points in the first half to keep Mount Holyoke in the game. Her fourth trey of the day sliced the deficit to 30-21 at the 6:42 mark. The Lyons trailed 38-30 following a fast break layup by first year forward Jennine Vizcaino with just under three minutes remaining in the frame.
From there, Babson took over. The Beavers closed out the half with eight straight points to open up a 46-30 edge at the break. They then outscored Mount Holyoke 35-8 in the first 13 minutes of the second stanza to put things away. Adewumi registered 13 points after the intermission.
Babson has clinched the top seed and home court advantage in next week's NEWMAC Tournament. The Beavers have earned a quarterfinal round bye. After hosting both semifinal round contests on Saturday, the two time reigning champions will host the title game on Sunday.
Over the course of the afternoon, donations were accepted, with all proceeds going to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund. Fans were encouraged to wear pink and contribute to research initiatives, as the Lyons took part in the WBCA's Pink Zone initiative. Pink Zone is a global, unified effort for the WBCA nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond.
Members of both teams sported pink shooting shirts and shoelaces during the game, and proceeds from admission fees will be donated to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund. The Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund is a 501 c(3) charitable organization committed to being a part of finding an answer in the fight against cancer through raising money for scientific research, assisting the underserved and unifying people for a common cause.
