SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Feb. 16, 2011) – First year forward Larla Brown recorded 20 points and five assists to lead the Coast Guard Academy women's basketball team to a 48-36 victory over Mount Holyoke College this evening at the Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium. With the win, the Bears snapped an 18 game losing streak and secured a split in their season series against the Lyons. It was their first NEWMAC victory of the season.
Guards Angelica Pascual and Christine Chancy accounted for 24 of Mount Holyoke's 36 points, scoring 14 and 10, respectively. Pascual also pulled down five rebounds, while Chancy had nine. The Lyons were limited to just 21.0% (13-62) shooting from the floor. Chancy made both of their three-pointers. Senior guard Emilie Methot chipped in with six points.
Three players reached double digits in the scoring column for Coast Guard, which converted 43.2% (19-44) of its shots from the field. First year guard Kaitlin Ward drained three shots from beyond the arc on her way to 11 points. She also came up with a game best 11 boards to complete the double-double. Classmate Alexa Hunka came off the bench to post 10 points and six boards. Meanwhile, senior forward Allison Majcher filled the stat sheet with six points, 10 rebounds, four assists, three steals and three blocked shots. The Bears finished with a 43-37 edge on the glass. They never trailed in the contest.
Back-to-back jumpers by Brown capped off an 8-0 run and put Coast Guard in front 12-4 just over 10 minutes into the game. The Bears then took control with 14-1 spurt over a span of six minutes late in the first half. Ward highlighted the rally with consecutive treys, and Brown brought it to a close with two more midrange jumpers. The second of those gave the guests a 26-9 cushion with 34 seconds remaining in the first half. They took a 26-11 into the locker room. Brown tallied 12 of her 20 points before the break. Pascual had seven for Mount Holyoke.
The Lyons sliced the deficit to eight points on three occasions in the second half, but it was not enough. Brown scored eight more points, while Hunko took control of the paint with eight of her own. Chancy connected on both of her three-pointers after the intermission en route to 10 second half points.
Both squads will close out their 2010-11 seasons in front of their home crowds on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Mount Holyoke (7-16, 5-12 NEWMAC) will host undefeated Babson College, while Coast Guard (3-20, 1-16 NEWMAC) will entertain Clark University.
