SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. (Nov. 21, 2010) – Junior forward Tricia Chase posted her first career double-double on 12 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Mount Holyoke College women's basketball team to a 54-51 triumph over Vassar College in the final game of the 2010 Seven Sisters Classic. It was the Lyons' first win of the season and their fourth straight over Vassar.
The hosts finished with a 41-32 advantage on the glass and forced the Brewers into 27 turnovers. They pulled down 19 offensive boards en route to an 18-3 edge in second chance points.
At the conclusion of the tournament, Chase was named to the All-Classic Team. She was joined on the squad by sophomore Angelica Pascual, who rounded out her outstanding weekend with 15 more points. The guard exploded for a program record 37 points in her team's heartbreaking 62-60 loss to Agnes Scott College yesterday.
First year Annabel Barrett chipped in with 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting off the bench. Meanwhile, junior forward Bree Hollinger added seven points and seven rebounds. As a team, Mount Holyoke converted 33.9% (20-59) of its shots from the field.
Three players reached double digits in the scoring column for Vassar, which shot 36.6% (15-41) from the field and 74.1% (20-27) from the charity stripe. Junior Brittany Parks and first year Cyndi Matsuoka were each named to the All-Classic Team after totaling 15 and 14 points, respectively. Parks scored 11 of her points from the free throw line. The duo closed out the weekend with 79 of their team's 118 points. First year Hannah Senftleber added 13 points and seven boards.
Mount Holyoke gained control of the contest with a 9-0 run in the latter stages of the first half. Five different players recorded points during the spurt, which spanned just under five minutes. The Lyons enjoyed a 24-12 advantage following a putback layup by Hollinger at the 2:46 mark.
A layup by Pascual extended the cushion to 28-14 with 54 seconds remaining in the half, but Vassar closed out the period with five unanswered points. Matsuoka drained a three-pointer from the top of the arc at the horn to slice the deficit to 28-19.
Pascual and Matsuoka each had seven points at the break.
Vassar (1-1, 0-0 LL) fought its way back into the game with a 9-2 surge midway through the second stanza. Parks' fifth free throw during the run trimmed the margin to 41-37 with 9:10 remaining in regulation.
The Lyons responded with six straight points over the next minute to push their lead back to 47-37.
Refusing to go away, Vassar once again put together a 9-2 run over the next six minutes. The Brewers cut the deficit to 49-48 on a free throw by Senftleber at the 1:39 mark.
From there, Mount Holyoke went 5-of-8 from the charity stripe to seal things.
Parks had a chance to send the contest to overtime with a three-pointer at the buzzer, but her shot was off target, and Chase corralled the rebound.
Mount Holyoke (1-2, 0-0 NEWMAC) will return to action on Tuesday, when it visits top ranked Amherst College at 7:30 p.m.
