Track and Field Has Impressive Showing at Amherst Spring Fling

Amherst, Mass. - April 9, 2022 - The Mount Holyoke College track and field team competed at the Amherst Spring Fling on Saturday afternoon where the Lyons recorded six top-10 all-time performances in Mount Holyoke track and field program history.

Opening competition in the field events for Mount Holyoke was first-year Abby Elliot (Carmel, Ind.) who placed ninth overall in the discus throw and threw a personal-best mark of 25.55 meters, while first-year Kara Setal (Naugatuck, Conn.) followed in tenth with a mark of 25.51. First-year Aria Mallare (Chicago, Ill.) finished tenth overall in the long jump posting a mark of 4.80 meters which ranks eighth all-time in Mount Holyoke program history. First-year Helen Frank (Rochester, N.Y.) recorded a top-15 finish and a collegiate personal best in the pole vault, clearing 2.35 meters which ties for third all-time in Mount Holyoke program history.

First-year Erin Siegel (San Diego, Calif.) placed ninth in the javelin, notching a personal-best mark of 21.55 meters, while junior Emma Doyle (Lebanon, N.H.) placed third overall in the shot put with a mark of 10.14 meters. Sophomore Allyson Joseph (Danbury, Conn.) placed eighth in the shot put posting a mark of 9.30 meters, while Setal followed in ninth, recording a personal best of 9.10 meters. 

Wrapping up for the Lyons in the field events, Setal finished fourth in the hammer throw recording a mark of 36.49 meters which ranks ninth all-time in Mount Holyoke program history. Doyle placed ninth overall in the hammer throw, notching a personal best of 32.33 meters.

Opening up competition on the track, first-year Tessa Lancaster (Mansfield, Mass.) finished fifth overall in the 3000 meter steeplechase, crossing the line with a time of 11:57.40 which marks a second-best all-time performance in Mount Holyoke program history, just four seconds off the school record. Sophomore Emily Hood (Hardwick, Mass.) finished in eighth place in her 3000 meter steeplechase debut, recording a time of 12:51.15. Senior Simone Jacob (San Francisco, Calif.) placed fifth in the 1500 meter run, notching a six-second personal best with a time of 4:46.35 which ranks second all-time in Mount Holyoke program history, just two seconds off the school record. Junior Lauren Selkin (Greenwich, Conn.) followed in sixth place recording a personal best of 4:47.78.

In the 400 meter dash, first-year Kim Beaver (Agawam, Mass.) posted over a four-second collegiate personal best clocking in a time of 1:03.56, while in the 100 meter dash, first-year Addison Heintz (Apex, N.C.) recorded a top-20 finish by running a time of 13.87. In the 800 meter run, senior Sydney Nash (New Hartford, Conn.) crossed the line with a time of 2:29.85, while senior Amanda Kearney (Teaneck, N.J.) notched a five-second personal best in the 400 meter hurdles, finishing with a time of 1:18.72. 

Representing Mount Holyoke in the 200 meter dash, Beaver clocked in a time of 28.93, while first-year Olivia Johnson (Mount Desert, Maine) recorded a 13-second personal record in the 5000 meter run, crossing the line with a time of 20:19.45 which was good for seventh place. Senior Sophie Gronbeck (Westfield, Mass.) followed in eighth place, posting a time of 20:31.21 for the 5000 meter, while sophomore Lily Nemirovsky (Bedford, Mass.) finished in tenth clocking in a time of 21:35.04. 

Up next, Mount Holyoke will travel to Westfield, Mass. to compete in the Jerry Gravel Invitational, hosted by Westfield State University. The meet is set to begin at 10 a.m.
