Track and Field Takes Top-Five Finish at Jerry Gravel Invitational

Westfield, Mass. - April 16, 2022 - The Mount Holyoke College track and field team competed at the Jerry Gravel Invitational on Saturday afternoon, a meet hosted at Westfield State University. The Lyons accumulated 72 points on the day, good for a top-five team finish.

In the field events, Emma Doyle (West Lebanon, N.H.) posted a fifth-place finish in the shot put recording a distance of 10.24 meters, which was the eighth-best throw in Mount Holyoke College outdoor track and field program history. Helen Frank (Rochester, N.Y.) also had an impressive performance in the pole vault clearing 2.65 meters, which was the third-best performance all-time at Mount Holyoke. Lucy Sternberg (Stonington, Conn.) then took sixth in the triple jump clearing 9.53 meters, good for tenth all-time.

Senior Sophia Gronbeck (Westfield, Mass.) placed second in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a mark of 13:01.22, the ninth-fastest time at MHC, while in the 4x100 meter relay, the team of Sternberg, Addison Heintz (Apex, N.C.), Amanda Kearney (Teaneck, N.J.) and Cynthia Akanaga (Imo, Nigeria) combined for a fourth-place time of 55.83 seconds.

First-year Olivia Johnson (Mount Desert, Maine) had an impressive performance in the 1500 meter run clocking in at 5:15.76 which was good for second overall, before Sternberg put forth the Lyons' top performance in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.59 seconds.

First-year Kim Beaver (Agawam, Mass.) delivered a win for the Lyons in the 800 meter race with a time of 2:25.81, finishing just ahead of Tessa Lancaster (Mansfield, Mass.), who notched a time of 2:27.78 for third overall. Lauren Selkin (Greenwich, Conn.) took fourth with a time of 2:28.18.

Eliza Butler (Hartsdale, N.Y.) was third in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:14.79, while in the 5k, Lily Nemirovsky (Bedford, Mass.) came across fourth with a time of 21:18.06. Sarah Hyde (Arlington, Mass.) and Emily Hood (Hardwick, Mass.) finished fifth and sixth, respectively, as Hyde turned in a time of 21:28.63, while Hood registered a time of 22:33.73.

The Lyons had a pair of impressive performances at the Silfen Elite Distance Festival on Friday night, as Lancaster competed in the 3000 meter steeplechase and delivered a time of 11:54.73, just 1.46 seconds off the program record in the event. Additionally, Selkin broke her own record in the women's 5k with a time of 17:40.59, topping her previous record-breaking time of 17:56.68 from the Tufts Snowflake Classic on April 2.

Mount Holyoke College will now prepare for the Sean Collier Invitational, which will be hosted by MIT on Saturday, April 23. The meet is set to begin at 11 a.m.
